Moya Ryan in to European quarter final

Bridgetown’s Moya Ryan will compete in a European Games quarter final after her and doubles partner Joshua Magee won their opening two group games. The Irish pair face the number one seed from France Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue in Poland today (Thursday) to see which outfit will top their group. With two teams progressing from each of the four groups, Ryan and Magee have already done enough to book their quarter final spot. On Monday they defeated the Italian pairing of Gianmarco Bailetti and Martina Cossini 21-14 21-13 as they built up early leads and managed to keep their composure to hold on in both games. The following day the pair produced a scintillating opening game to down Milan Dratva and Katarina Vargova 21-5. The Slovakian pairing were always set to fight back but Ryan and Magee secured another straight sets win as they took game two 21-15. The quarter finals will take place on Friday morning. Clare badminton star and partner bow out of world championships

Bridgetown badminton player Moya Ryan and her doubles partner Kate Frost were narrowly beaten in the opening round of the BWF World Championships, writes Ivan Smyth. Ryan and Frost were beaten by Switzerland duo Aline Muller and Jenjira Stadelmann 24-22, 21-12 in Huelva, Spain. The Irish duo won the Women’s Doubles title at the Irish National Badminton Championships in Blanchardstown two months ago. Ryan and Frost trailed 14-9 in the opening game before a run of seven points without reply edged them ahead. They managed to move 20-16 in front and a point away from claiming the opening game. However, the Switzerland duo showed their experience to level the game at 20 apiece. In badminton a team needs to win a game by two points. Muller and Stadelmann moved 21-20 and 22-21 ahead but both times Ryan and Frost responded. The Irish pair were unable to get in front as they lost the opening game 24-22. This was a big blow …
