Moya Ryan in to European quarter final

Bridgetown’s Moya Ryan will compete in a European Games quarter final after her and doubles partner Joshua Magee won their opening two group games.
The Irish pair face the number one seed from France Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue in Poland today (Thursday) to see which outfit will top their group.
With two teams progressing from each of the four groups, Ryan and Magee have already done enough to book their quarter final spot.
On Monday they defeated the Italian pairing of Gianmarco Bailetti and Martina Cossini 21-14 21-13 as they built up early leads and managed to keep their composure to hold on in both games.
The following day the pair produced a scintillating opening game to down Milan Dratva and Katarina Vargova 21-5. The Slovakian pairing were always set to fight back but Ryan and Magee secured another straight sets win as they took game two 21-15.
The quarter finals will take place on Friday morning. Should Ryan and Magee claim victory there they will be guaranteed a European medal.
This Irish pairing claimed gold at the Nationals earlier this season while the pair would have felt confident of securing a top two spot in the group. They were ranked just ahead of their Slovakian opponents while the Italian pairing were only two places higher in the seedings than the Irish duo.
The Bridgetown woman has enjoyed a busy week as she is also competing in the women’s doubles alongside Kate Frost.
Ryan and Frost have been pitted in a difficult group. Their opening game on Monday saw them lose out to the third seeds from France Margot Lambert and Anne Tran 21-7 21-8.
Ryan played two games on Monday and Tuesday with the women’s doubles matches coming after the games alongside Joshua Magee.
Ryan and Frost faced the number five ranked Swedish sisters Moa and Tilda Sjoo. The Irish duo produced an improved display but lost out 21-14 21-11.
They were due to face Germany’s Linda Efler and Isabel Lohau last night (Wednesday).
Ballyvaughan’s Liam Jegou is set to compete in the Canoe Slalom discipline at the Games.
Jegou, alongside 100m hurdler Sarah Lavin was named by the Olympic Federation of Ireland as the Team Ireland Flagbearers.
The Ballyvaughan man is making his European Games although the course for Krakow 2023 at the Kolna Sports Centre, is one that is familiar to Jegou and the team, and they have competed on it several times over the past few years.
The Clare canoeist will compete in his heats on Friday morning with the action set to begin at 9.35am.
If Jegou progresses then he will take part in the semi finals which will start at 9.04am on Sunday morning, the final day of the Games. The Men’s Canoe Final will be held at 11.40am.
