Over 50 firefighters will display their cleaning skills at seven locations throughout the county to raise money for children with special needs. The Clare Fire and Rescue Service has teamed up with Clare Crusaders Children’s Clinic to organise a charity car wash this Saturday from 10am to 4pm. People can get their car washed outside fire stations in Ennis, Shannon, Scariff, Kilrush, Church Street car park in Ennistymon; SuperValu, Killaloe and the Square, Kilkee. All donations will go to the clinic. Senior assistant fire chief, Tom Burke, said the fire service is delighted to be associated with the clinic, which provides hundreds of children in the county with free therapy. He encouraged anyone who needs their vehicle washed to consider supporting the event.

Clare County Council is advising the public that due to a water mains break in Killaloe a number of areas will experience loss of supply and poor water pressure. These include: Hill Road; Ballyvalley; Creeveroe; and Knockyclovaun. Clare County Council are currently carrying out repair work and water supplies will be restored as soon as possible.   By Carol Byrne

A shield commemorating Brian Ború in his birthplace will be unveiled in Killaloe this Saturday afternoon. Locals and visitors will be able to admire this piece of sculpture, which was forged by turning pieces of “scrap” copper into a Brian Ború “treasure”. It will be mounted on the wall outside the Killaloe Library/Brian Ború Heritage Centre for the enjoyment of passers-by. This piece was commissioned this year by the Féile Brian Ború committee to commemorate the famous High King. During Féile Brian Ború in July, the pieces for this unique mural were created by adults and children, who took part in copper craft workshops with silversmith, Suzi Lewisohn at the CELT Traditional Craft Experience. The shield is a two-dimensional copper sculpture, using different techniques, including stampwork, riveting and wirework. This artwork was created and finished by East Clare-based blacksmith, Mark Wilson and the design for the piece was taken from a woodcut created by artist and printmaker, Suzannah O’Reilly, with …

BÓTHAR founder, Peter Ireton was thrilled to present a €22,000 cheque this week to his own charity, the proceeds of a 62km walk from Limerick to Killaloe and back. The funds that Peter and his fellow walkers raised will be going to fund Bóthar’s fourth African creamery in Rusizi, Rwanda. The creamery is now at the final stages of completion. Aideen O’Leary, from Cork, is currently on the ground in Rusizi, working with local community groups and getting the creamery ready to open later this year. Creameries are an important part of providing sustainable futures for the recipient families, who have received an Irish dairy cow through Bóthar. THE Government has been urged to introduce new legislation to provide legal protection for home-owners in unfinished ghost estates where the builder has gone bust. The call was made this week by Michele Burke and William Buck, who are due to move into their new detached home in Ard na Deirge within the next week, eight years after paying a booking deposit. The couple have been paying almost €1,400 on a mortgage and rent every month for the past number of years. John Ryan Senior and his wife, Breda, along with their son, John Ryan Junior, who purchased a neighbouring dwelling, are also putting the finishing touches to their houses, as they prepare for the long-awaited move. Ms Burke said there was no legal protection for people living in unfinished estates where the builder has gone bust. She urged all local authorities to engage in “active dialogue” with people in similar situations, like director of services, Ger Dollard did since …

Clare County Council has taken in charge 29 housing developments comprising hundreds of residential and other properties throughout the county since the beginning of 2013. The council has confirmed it  is making “steady progress” in addressing difficulties at 180 developments around Clare brought about through the collapse of many companies in the building sector. In 2013, a total of 14 developments were formally taken in charge by the local authority, while an additional 15 developments have been fully taking in charge during 2014. “Each taking in charge involves a complex process culminating in a public consultation and a resolution of the elected members,” said Gerard Dollard, director of services, Clare County Council. The council has made a comprehensive submission to the department on the issue and has secured funding under the Special Resolutions Fund for two developments at Aisling on the Shanaway Road, Ennis and Bruachlan Grianán on the Westbury development in South East Clare, according to Mr Dollard. An all-island tourism delegation from the four main locations with connections Brian Boru will embark on a promotional drive in the United States this week. Coinciding with the 1,000 anniversary of Boru’s death at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014, National Brian Boru Programme representatives from Clare, Armagh, Dublin and Tipperary, will attend the annual Milwaukee Irish Fest in Wisconsin where they will be seeking to attract some of the estimated 150,000 festival goers to Ireland. Boru is a central theme of this year’s Milwaukee Irish Fest from August 14-17. Established in 1981 by members of Milwaukee’s Irish community, the Fest covers 74 acres of Lake Michigan’s shoreline and showcases Irish music, history, dance, drama, sports and culture. The Festival is also used by tourist agencies such as Tourism Ireland, Aer Lingus and CIE Tours as an opportunity to market Ireland as a desirable tourist destination. A Killaloe farmer believes he is “under siege”, having sustained losses from vandalism totalling an estimated €25,000 over a four-year period. Michael Scanlan, Garraunboy, has decided to speak publicly about his ordeal, in the hope that the on-off cycle of malicious damage to his farm will finally cease. In addition to at least 15 serious incidents of what Mr Scanlan has described as criminal damage, at least 100 punctures had to be repaired and four tyres replaced on cars and his jeep. The first act of vandalism occurred in January 2010 and the most recent on June 19; tractor tyres being slashed in both cases. When Padraig Nally was cleared of manslaughter in 2006, after shooting dead Traveller John ‘Frog’ Ward, there were changes in the law, which allow people to take more direct action when defending themselves or their property.
