The occupant of a vehicle which was involoved in a crash near Killaloe last week has died in hospital from his injuries. The fatal traffic accident occurred between 4.05am and 4.12am on Tuesday morning, November 7 last in the townland of Cloonfadda which is not too far from Clarisford on the Killaloe to Limerick Road. The car contained five occupants which were all injured in the crash and removed to University Hospital Limerick. Unfortunately one of the occupant’s injuries were so severe that he later died. Gardai in Killaloe are investigating the circumstances surrounding this accident and are appealing for information from any person who may have witnessed the accident or who has any information concerning this car and its occupants either before or after the accident.

KILLALOE bats will be afforded special protection, as part of the green light to develop new sports facilities on the grounds of a €2.5 million local recreational park. An automatic timing system will have to be installed on the proposed floodlights for new rugby and athletic training facilities in Clarisford Park, to ensure they do not operate between April 1 and September 14 every year. This is one of seven planning conditions attached to the planning permission secured by Ballina Killaloe Sports and Community Facilities Development Company, in the interests of ecology and to avoid disturbance to bat species. Clarisford Park is a popular location for recreational activities and currently has a weekly estimated usage of 2,500. Spearheaded by former Munster, Ireland and Lions hooker Keith Wood, the park is very popular with both locals and visitors and is the venue for weekly 5km runs on Saturday mornings. A decision is expected to be made soon that would speed up the much needed redevelopment of St Anne’s Community College in Killaloe, according to Clare TD Timmy Dooley. Deputy Dooley made the comments after receiving a parliamentary reply from the Minister for Education which outlined the current state of play with regard to the construction project at the school. “I am led to believe that the Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board, which has been tasked with delivering this project, have now completed their report, and it has been sent to the Department of Education for a final decision. At present, this report is being reviewed by officials in the Minister’s office and in the forward planning unit of the Department. “The next step is the awarding of the tender to the successful bidder, and then construction can commence. “This will be the fourth extension of the college since its establishment in 1987, and one that is urgently …

ST Anne’s Killaloe will be hoping to make history on Saturday by winning a Munster senior football title for the first time. Coming from a traditional hurling area, St Anne’s have surprised many by getting to the final with a team that includes just six players who play regular club football. Not surprisingly, they will carry the underdogs’ tag against Boherbue Community School from Cork, with the throw-in time scheduled for 12.30pm at Ballyagran. Managed by teachers John Gleeson (Ballina) and Raymond Murray, who hails from Mountbellew in Galway, a final decision on the line-up will not be made until shortly before throw-in, as they await a fitness report on Liam Harte, who missed the semi-final due to injury. According to Gleeson, Harte’s chances of playing are 50/50. Harte’s brother Colin is the team captain and he will fill the centre-back position. A postmortem is due to be carried out today (Friday) on the body of a man recovered from a canal in Killaloe yesterday morning. The alarm was raised before 9am when a person was seen in the water close to Killaloe bridge. The Irish Coast Guard was alerted and the Killaloe unit launched their boat and made their way to the scene. Other members of the team travelled to the scene by road. The boat crew located and recovered the body from the water and the man was subsequently pronounced dead. The man’s body was removed to University Hospital Limerick. Believed to be in his 60s, the man had not been reported missing.

AN award-winning €2.5m sports and recreation facility at Clarisford Park, Killaloe, is in the running for another award. Officially opened by Finance Minister, Michael Noonan last September, Clarisford Park has been confirmed as a finalist in the Best Public Park Category at the 2017 Community and Council Awards, presented by IPB Insurance and LAMA. It has been shortlised alongside St Catherine’s Park, Lucan; Mungret Park and Playground, Limerick and Tramore Valley Park, Cork. The Community and Council Awards highlight and recognise communities and councils working together, bringing national recognition to projects and developments that may otherwise go unrecognised. Town, borough, city and county councillors nominate projects across 20 categories that demonstrate the work implemented through unique projects that enhance their local area for the good of the community. Once a project is nominated, the individual(s) associated with the nominated project or initiative are contacted and given the opportunity to submit an entry. THE Lough Derg region is to benefit from a €200,000 fund to market, develop and promote the Lough Derg Blueway, which includes the soon-to-be completed Lough Derg Canoe Trail. The funding boost was announced by Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys and is to be spread across the Scariff and Nenagh rural economic development zones (REDZ). Under the 2016 REDZ scheme, just over €5.3 million was approved for 41 projects, of which eight were local authority-led projects impacting on the wider waterway network. They included Scariff/Nenagh on Lough Derg, from Bagnelstown on the Barrow to Banagher on the Shannon and Ballinamore on the Shannon-Erne Waterway. Minister Humphreys said, “The REDZ scheme aims to improve links between rural towns and their hinterlands to stimulate activity at a local level. It is one of a number of schemes that my department has been rolling out to boost economic activity and improve living standards across rural Ireland.” Managed …

Canoe facilities and services blocks are being provided at various locations around Lough Derg as part of an initiative aimed at promoting water-based activities on Ireland’s third largest lake. Clare County Council has confirmed that the proposed Lough Derg Canoe Trail, which is scheduled for completion by January 2017, will see facilities installed in Killaloe, Ballycuggeran, and Scarriff, Mountshannon and Dromaan harbours. The Trail project is an initiative of the Lough Derg Marketing Group and is being funded under the Lough Derg Stimulus Fund. Waterways Ireland is leading the design and development of the project in partnership with the Clare County Council, Galway County Council and Tipperary County Council. Trail information signage is being provided at Canal Bank, Killaloe, where upgrade works to the existing slipway are also being undertaken. Works underway at the Mill Yard, Killaloe include the provision of trail information signage, a canoe storage rack and planting/screening of same.
