No bail for ‘ghost in jurisdiction’ found near stolen SUV with key

A man found near a stolen SUV in Shannon and allegedly in unlawful possession of a vehicle diagnostic unit was “somewhat of a ghost in this jurisdiction”, a court has heard. Michal Grzegorek (31), of no fixed abode, was arrested in Shannon in August in close proximity to a stolen Range Rover, Ennis district court heard. Opposing Grzegorek’s application to be released on bail, Garda Robert Grant, of Shannon Garda station, said the accused was located approximately 500 metres from the vehicle in Shannon on August 25. Garda Grant said Grzegorek could not account for his movements on the night nor his proximity to the vehicle. The garda said Grzegorek was searched and is alleged to have had in his possession, a Range Rover key and a diagnostic key for vehicles. Grzegorek is charged that at Shannon garda station Tullyvarraga, Shannon on August 25, when not at his place of residence, he possessed a Range Rover key and an on-board …

Clare man accused of quick-fire crime spree refused bail

A MAN alleged to have carried out a burglary and four thefts over a 45-minute period in Ennis on Wednesday, has been refused bail.  Nathan Egan (29), with an address at Sandfield Court, Ennis, appeared at Ennis district court this Thursday charged in connection with a series of offences at businesses in the town centre on October 12.  Egan is charged with stealing various items from Haven Pharmacy, Abbey Street; Lifestyle sports, High Street, and Eurogiant, O’Connell Square.  He is also accused of stealing a racer bike valued at €1000 at the Friary car park.  Egan is further charged with entering the Queens Hotel as a trespasser with intent to commit theft.  Garda Joe Kearney told the court he arrested Egan on Abbey Street at 6.20pm on October 12. The court heard the accused was charged with five offences.  Garda Kearney said the accused made no reply to any of the charges after caution. Solicitor Tara Godfrey applied for bail …

Clare family terrorised after threat over alleged drug debt

A CLARE family was “terrorised, intimidated and harassed” as a result of a threat made over an alleged drug debt, a court has heard. At Ennis district court, Judge Mary Larkin imposed a nine-month prison sentence with the final month suspended, on Kilrush man Patrick Hall (36). Hall, of no fixed abode and who had been living in a caravan in the Beech Park area of Kilrush, was before the court having previously pleaded guilty to making a threat to a man to burn down his house. The court heard that Hall approached the man at his place of work in Kilrush on July 22 and told him that if he didn’t ring a number by a certain time, his house would be burned down. ‘Smirking’ defendant might be cured by jail, says judge

A JUDGE has asked if a few weeks in jail would cure a “smirking” Shannon man who threatened to “karate kick” a garda. Judge Mary Larkin was speaking at Ennis district court after hearing details of a public order incident that occurred in the Fairgreen, Ennis on June 29, 2022. Outlining the facts of the case, Sergeant Aiden Lonergan told the court that gardaí responded to a health call at the popular public park on the date in question.  Sergeant Lonergan said gardaí spoke to Lee Mulqueen who became verbally abusive and aggressive.  The court heard Mulqueen told gardaí, “F**k off ye fat b******s. Ye are nothing but scumbags. Come near me and I will karate kick you into the head, go f**k yourself”.  Sergeant Lonergan said Mulqueen refused to comply with a direction to leave the area and continued to be abusive.  Mulqueen, with former addresses in Shannon and Connolly Place, Waterford city, pleaded guilty to engaging in behaviour …

Drunk stonemason used a consaw on the wall of pub

A STONEMASON was not in his “full senses” when he used a consaw to try and damage a wall outside a pub, a court has heard. At Killaloe district court, Brendan Ryan (37), with an address at Cooleen, Birdhill, Co Tipperary, pleaded guilty to the production of an offensive weapon during the commission of an offence and a further charge of being intoxicated to such an extent so as to be a danger to himself or others. The charges arise from an incident at O Riains public house in Ballina, Co Tipperary on November 1, 2021. Sergeant Aiden Lonergan said in light of the guilty pleas, the State would be offering no evidence on the two remaining charges of criminal damage and breach of the peace. Alleged hatchet victim ‘vulnerable man with special needs’

A CLARE man used a hatchet to allegedly assault a vulnerable man with special needs, a court has heard. At Ennis district court this week, Judge Mary Larkin refused bail in the case of Andre Donegan (30). Donegan, with an address at Smith’s Gardens, Kilkee, is charged with assault causing harm to an adult male.  He is further charged with the production of hatchet during the course of a dispute, in a manner likely to intimidate or cause injury. Both charges arise from an alleged incident at St Patrick’s Terrace, Kilkee, on June 1, 2019. Donegan has indicated that he will plead guilty to assault.  Opposing Donegan’s bail application, Garda Jack Cagney of Kilrush garda station told the court that on the date in question it will be alleged Donegan used a hatchet to strike the left side of the alleged victim’s head.  The man was hospitalised and received treatment for a wound, the court heard.  The court heard the …

Judge calls for ‘urgent’ interview of man on sex abuse allegation

A JUDGE has called on Gardai to interview a father accused of sexually abusing his daughter “as a matter of urgency”. At the Family Law Court, Judge Mary Larkin said, “I hate to say it but if the man went down to Supermacs and stole a burger he would probably be interviewed within the week”. Judge Larkin made her comment after solicitor, Pamela Clancy for the man said that it may be a number of months before Gardai interview her client on the matter. Ms Clancy said that there was a complaint made against the man to TUSLA of sexual abuse of his child two weeks after a circuit court judge struck out a family law appeal by the child’s mother. Ms Clancy said that an independent child expert last year recommended in a report that the father should have sole custody of his daughter. Video of siblings’ dispute as bad as Flatley’s film, court told

A VIDEOED flashpoint in a siblings’ row over land in east Clare “was a very bad production – nearly as bad at Flatley’s Blackbird”, a court has heard. At Killaloe District Court sitting in Ennis, solicitor Daragh Hassett made the comment referring to a film directed by and starring Michael Flatley that has received extremely poor reviews. The solicitor told the court that a yard row between his client, Ciaran Griffin and two siblings, Anthony Griffin and Ruth Griffin “was a complete set-up”. Both Ruth Griffin and Anthony Griffin in evidence stated that this wasn’t the case. Ruth Griffin videoed the row on a mobile phone and the footage was played to the court as part of the State prosecution against her brother, Ciaran Griffin. Mr Hassett said that this was a case of ‘Lights, Camera, Action’.
