Mayor of Ennis, Councillor Ann Norton cut the tape today to officially open the new €1.75 million covered building for market traders in Ennis town centre. Councillor Norton completed the formalities in the presence of Clare County Council, CEO, Past Dowling; Mayor of Clare, Councillor Bill Chambers; President of Ennis Chamberof Commerce, Jean McCabe and street trader, Gobnait Kelly. The ceremony marked the completion of phase one of the redevelopment of the market at Garraunakilla, the site of the Farmers’ Market. THE new €1.75 million covered building for market traders in Ennis town centre will be officially opened this Friday. The ceremony marks the completion of phase one of the redevelopment of the market at Garraunakilla, the site of the Farmers’ Market. Wednesday, Friday and Saturday are the trading days at Ennis Market, where up to 21 traders will provide a wide range of goods, including specialty foods, baking and confectionery, arts and crafts and health and beauty products. On non-trading days, the facility is available for parking, providing 27 spaces in a safe, convenient central location. WORK on revamping Ennis’ market to include a new “iconic” covered building for traders has now begun in the town centre. It is expected that the new market will be ready in time to be showcased to the hundreds of thousands of visitors who will flock to Ennis for next year’s Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. Construction work has started on the Ennis Market Rejuvenation Project with a finish date of July 2016 for phase one of the redevelopment of the market at Garraunakilla. The new market will have room for 25 stalls, made up of internal covered areas and also space for stalls in the courtyard outside. The actual number of stalls for each market will vary, depending on the size of the stalls to be accommodated. According to the council, the allocation of stalls will be done through an open process and following discussion with market traders and other interested parties. Clare County Council has confirmed that Phase 1 of the Ennis Market Rejuvenation project is now proceeding to tender stage and construction is expected to commence in the autumn of 2015 The €1.75m loan for the Market Rejuvenation Project, which also includes the upgrading of the streets adjoining the market area, is now in place. Clare County Council says a detailed design will shortly proceed to tender stage in relation to Phase One of the redevelopment of the market which will begin at Garraunakilla, the site of the current Farmer’s Market. THE redevelopment of Ennis’ market has moved a step closer this week with members of Ennis Town Council agreeing to seek a loan for the proposed plan for Garraunakilla. The council will be looking for a loan of €1.75 million from the government to facilitate the proposed works, with the construction of the covered market itself expected to cost less than half a million while much of the funding would also be spent on improvements to the general area. Members of the council gave their backing to the planned re-vamp of the market on Monday evening, with council officials stressing that this is just “one step in a process”. According to town manager Ger Dollard there will be full consultation, funding will have to be sourced and a tender process will have to be gone through before any works are carried out.
