The death has taken place in the Beacon Hospital of retired parish priest of Birr, Fr Tony Cahir. In his mid 70s, Fr Cahir was a priest of the Diocese of Killaloe for 52 years. A native of Ennis, Fr Cahir was educated at St Flannan’s College, Ennis and the Pontifical Irish College in Rome where he was ordained in March 1963. After ordination, he remained in Rome attending the Second Vatican Council until December. In January 1964 he was appointed to the Diocese of Dromore as Spiritual Director in St Colman’s College, Newry and two years later he returned to the Diocese of Killaloe and was appointed to St Flannan’s College. In 1967 he was appointed to teach in England, teaching for two years in secondary schools in London and Middlesex.  He also took a one year course in Catechetics at Corpus Christi College, London returning to the Diocese of Killaloe in June 1970 whereupon he was appointed full …

CARRIGAHOLT village came to a standstill on Wednesday afternoon for the funeral of Bernie Mahoney, Moveen, who died in a drowning accident on Sunday morning in Poulnasherry Bay. As he was brought to St Mary’s Church in the West Clare fishing village, Mr Mahoney was flanked by a guard of honour from O’Curry’s GAA Club, whom he represented for many years. In his late 30s, Mr Mahoney, a father of three, whose youngest child was due to be baptised last Sunday, was one of four people, including his brother, oyster collecting when tragedy struck. His three friends were rescued by brothers, Roger and Stephen Little, who live in Carnacalla, Kilrush. The brothers, who are experienced boats people, were alerted when their dogs barked incessantly at hearing calls for help, close to 3am on Sunday. “It was just pure luck. We came home at the right time,” Roger Little, who works as a tug boat captain for Dublin Port, explained. “I …

A PROUD grandmother whose young grandchildren were her “best work” was how the late Josephine, better known as Josie, Lucas was fondly remembered, as family and friends gathered for her funeral mass on Wednesday. The 74-year-old died following a tragic accident involving her own car in Francis Street, Ennis on Sunday afternoon. Emergency services were called, however, despite their best efforts she was pronounced dead at the scene.  Both Mrs Lucas’ grandchildren, who were with her, were treated for shock. Her brother, Kevin told mourners at St Joseph’s Church that his sister was “determined, confident and she spoke her mind” adding she was “very proud of being from Clare.” Mrs Lucas trained to be a nurse as a teenager, meeting her future husband, Tony in London before moving back to Clare where they joined the publican trade. Her family own Lucas’ pub on Parnell Street, with Kevin recalling his sister’s determined spirit during floods on the street. “I have great memories …
