Gardaí are treating as suspicious a fire at a Traveller accommodation site at Knockanean, on the outskirts of Ennis, in the early hours of Sunday morning. Emergency services were alerted to the fire just off Junction 13 of the M18 motorway at around 4am. Fire tenders, an ambulance and the gardaí attended the scene. The house, which was unoccupied at the time, was engulfed in flames. Gardaí say they’re treating the fire as suspicious and are awaiting results of a forensic examination before determining the course of their investigation. Anyone with information on the incident or who may have been in the Tulla Road area around 4am on Sunday morning tare asked to contact the bgardai at Ennis on 065 684 8100.

Gardai are treating as suspicious a fire at a house in Corofin which resulted in two people having to be taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment. The fire occurred around 8am this morning at the house at Gort Road and gardai have since completed a technical examination of the scene. Several units of the fire brigade and two ambulances from Ennis responded to the incident. Both men, one a pensioner who lived at the house, and a man who helped rescue him from the property, were treated with oxygen at the scene before being removed to hospital.

A woman was pronounced dead following a fire at a house in Firgrove at Hurler’s Cross in the early hours of this morning. The alarm was raised at around 1.30am and the emergency services were summoned. The woman was 70 years of age and she was pronounced dead shortly after 5am at the scene. Her name has not been released at the time of writing.

TWO young people and a 14-month-old baby are “lucky to be alive”, having had a narrow escape when they were involved in a single vehicle accident at Ballycar on Wednesday at approximately 1.40pm. Moments after their car left the road and overturned, smoke was seen coming from the car. Local garda Declan Fawl arrived at the scene to assist the trapped occupants, before the car became engulfed. He explained that the driver’s door handle had come off in the crash, so he came to their assistance to get the three occupants, including their baby, out through the back passenger doors. Garda Fawl said the car had hit the ditch and flipped onto the other side of the road. The crash was witnessed by another motorist and Garda Fawl just happened to be driving on the same road when the call came in. “I got them out through the back passenger door. A woman has died in a house fire in North Clare. GARDAÍ, ambulance services and three units from Ennistymon fire brigade attended the scene at Derrynavaha, Craggagh, Ballyvaughan after 7pm last night. The woman, whose name is yet to be officially released, is understood to have been in her 50s. She was alone in the house at the time of the incident. The fire brigade were called to the scene at 7.15pm and arrived half an hour later, by which time the woman had been removed from the house. Fire and ambulance personnel attempted to resuscitate the woman but she was subsequently pronounced dead. According to Clare’s Chief Fire Officer, Adrian Kelly, structural damage in the building impeded efforts to bring the fire under control. Gardaí in Ennistymon are investigating the fire, however it is not being treated as suspicious.

Garda are not treating as malicious a fire which claimed the lives of two people in Gort. Ben Whiteman (38) and Nuala Sweeney (65) died in the fire at Tom O’Donnell’s Flats, Station Road, Gort on Thursday morning last. Friends and relatives of Mr Whiteman gathered at Mullin’s Funeral Home in Gort on Monday to bid farewell to the British national, before a private cremation in Cork on Tuesday. Emergency services were called to the fire at 2.50am on Thursday morning. The fire was brought under control by Gort and Loughrea fire services. Two bodies were taken from the damaged building and removed to University Hospital Galway. No one else was injured in the incident.

A NURSING union has expressed relief that no patients or staff were injured following a fire at Limerick University Hospital (LUH) on Sunday evening. Up to 14 children had to be evacuated from the paediatric unit of LUH after a fire broke out in the building some time about 6.00 pm. All children were back in the Children’s Ark at 10 pm. The waiting room of the emergency department was also emptied while the fire brigade checked out the scene. Irish Nurses and Midwifery Organisation, Mid-West representative, Mary Fogarty expressed relief that none injuries were sustained by patients or staff as a result of the fire. Speaking to the Clare Champion, Ms Fogarty said that none of her members had voiced any concern to date about the cause of the fire. She added that she wasn’t aware what had caused the blaze.
