Quite a number of mid-morning voters combined shopping or a coffee break with trip to their polling station today (Friday).With their decision on the 16 Clare constituency candidates under seal, they can now relax and enjoy the rest of the day. The polling stations remain open until 10pm tonight and the count  will begin at the Falls Hotel, Ennistymon tomorrow (Saturday) at 9am.

Polling stations around the county opened at 7am this morning (Friday) for voting in General Election 2016.   The stations, which accommodate 146 ballot boxes, will remain open until 10pm tonight. There are 16 candidates in the field in the Clare constituency, with four seats to be filled. A total of 82,965 people are eligible to vote. Based on the statistics of the 2011 General Election, when there the was the same number of candidates, on a 70% turn out of voters, the quota will be in the region of 11,600. The count will take place in the Falls Hotel, Ennistymon, on Saturday, with proceedings starting at 9am. The North Clare venue was selected because the All-Ireland darts competition is taking place at Treacy’s West County Hotel this weekend. The unavailability of a suitable venue in Ennis has paved the way for a General Election count to take place in North Clare for the first time. A large function room and dining facilities are a prerequisite for an election count nowadays and the Falls Hotel in Ennistymon qualifies on both counts. With the Government giving the minimum required notice for polling day, county registrar Pat Wallace found that the West County Hotel, the traditional venue for major election counts, was already booked for Saturday, February 27. He said the move away from Ennis was unavoidable. The election count will bring a welcome boost for the Falls Hotel and other businesses.

THE response of the local communities in assisting their neighbours in need, as well as those in public services who have been working to deal with the aftermath of recent storms, was lauded by Tanáiste Eamon Gilmore at the 25th annual tourism conference in Ennistymon over the weekend. “This Government has responded to the severe weather damage, making €70m available for a pprogramme of repair and remediation works in the areas affected. This is in addition to the €25m announced for the Department of Social Protection’s Humanitarian Assistance Schemes.
