WORK being carried out to develop a hydroelectric system at the Falls Hotel in Ennistymon will not interfere with the long-term welfare of the renowned cascades that front the hotel, according to a Clare Green Party member. Work is ongoing to complete the project, which was given planning permission by Clare County Council. “It looks terrible at the moment but the hotel depends on that scenic view more than any other business in the town and, long term, it will be fine. The hotel is one of the greenest in Ireland. They have bees, an orchard and they grow organic food and now they’ll have hydro-power. Then the hotel will be run on hydro-power completely and as long as the falls go back to looking the way they did before, I have no issue. Gardaí in Ennistymon are seeking the public’s assistance in tracing the whereabouts of Maria Hennigar, missing from Doolin since early November. Aged 35, Maria is described as 5’7″, brown hair, blue/green eyes and of medium build. She was last seen at Doonmacphelim, Doolin. She was reported missing on November 22 by a concerned neighbour. Anyone who may have seen Maria or may know of her whereabouts is asked to contact Ennistymon Garda station on 065 7072180, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

Clare Deputy Dr Michael Harty has pledged to raise the Shannondoc cutbacks in the county at this week’s session of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health. Dr Harty has acknowledged the changes to the Shannondoc out-of-hours services in Kilrush, Ennistymon and Killaloe are a reduction to the medical cover for patients. He claimed these changes are another manifestation of the mismanagement of the health service and highlighted the failure of the HSE to anticipate and plan for the medical manpower crisis which faces general practice and the wider health service. He said all out-of-hours services are experiencing difficulty in finding locums to supplement local GP rosters. “The working commitment and conditions of service required to work in single handed rural practice are too onerous. Consequently, GP positions are not being filled when they become vacant. The planned reduction in GP out-of-hours services in Clare has been condemned as “deeply flawed” by Deputy Timmy Dooley. Shannondoc’s Kilrush and Ennistymon service will close from Monday to Friday, relocating to Miltown Malbay, while the out-of-hours clinic will only open at weekends in Kilrush and Ennistymon. The Killaloe clinic will open during weekends only, on an as-needs basis, with a mobile doctor serving the centre. At weekends, the operating hours will change from 9am to 9pm to 2pm to 6pm, with patients to be seen in Limerick, Ennis and Nenagh centres outside of those hours. The changes to the Killaloe service will start next Monday while the timeframe for changes in West Clare is expected in the near future. The problems caused by the reduction in the number of centres from five to three were outlined by Deputy Dooley, during a special debate in Dáil Éireann. A proposal for a new bridge to resolve the traffic chaos at Blake’s Corner in Ennistymon can be dealt with through a Part VIII planning process. This follows the receipt by County Council of confirmation from An Bórd Pleanala that the proposed improvement scheme of a new bridge upriver of the existing bridge can proceed without the requirement to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement or a Natura Impact Statement. “Clare County Council is now in a position to resume its consideration of the issue and will be liaising with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) with a view to identifying and progressing toward a solution to the longstanding traffic problems at Blake’s Corner,” a spokesperson said.

THE Mid-West’s out-of-hours GP service, Shannondoc, has confirmed that due to a continued shortage of doctors, it is no longer able to maintain existing out-of-hours service levels across all its centres. Shannondoc, a not-for-profit service delivered by GPs in the region, will introduce changes to its Killaloe, Kilrush and Ennistymon centres over the coming weeks. The Killaloe clinic will open during weekdays only on an as-needs basis, with a mobile doctor servicing the centre, while at weekends the operating hours will change from 9am to 9pm to 2pm to 6pm, with patients seen at Limerick, Ennis and Nenagh centres outside those hours. Two German tourists were removed to hospital following a two-vehicle collision in North Clare. The men had been travelling along a narrow country road at Toornahooan, a short distance from Doolin, when the accident occurred. Two units of the fire brigade from Ennistymon along with ambulances from Ennistymon and Ennis responded to the incident along with gardaí. Members of the Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard were also requested to assist. The two male occupants of the rental car were injured in the collision while the driver of the second vehicle was unhurt. The injured were taken by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.
