Ennistymon CBS one step away from historic double

ENNISTYMON CBS are just one win away from completing an historic double this weekend, writes Ivan Smyth The north Clare school face Tipperary’s Presentation Ballingarry in the Munster Post Primary Schools C final at UL’s north campus this Saturday (throw in 12.30pm). Last weekend, the Ennistymon school comfortably accounted for Dungarvan CBS in the Munster Post Primary Schools C football final. This Saturday they play in the hurling equivalent as they try to lift the Corn Risteard Uí Mhathúna. Manager Jason Daffy is proud to see the school compete on both fronts as he believes his charges are ready to produce a big performance against a Presentation Ballingarry side that will prove stiff opposition this Saturday. “It is a huge achievement for the school to get to both finals. Munster glory for Ennistymon CBS as first leg of double lands

Michael O’Connor reports from Tipp town as Ennistymon CBS defeat Dungarvan CBS 3-13 to 1-5 in the Munster Schools C final IN the last four months St Flannans have won the Dean Ryan, St Joseph’s Tulla the Harty Cup and now Ennistymon CBS are the latest to announce their hunger for titles with a superb performance in the Munster C football final in Tipperary town on Saturday afternoon. Meeting the Rouine clan in Tipperary town before the game one automatically knew that some Ennistymon side was in action. Joint Captain Brendy Rouine was unfortunately side-lined with a hamstring issue and this scared and galvinised the school side not to use excuses but bring home the silverware. Ennistymon took to the field running against the breeze, yet it did not appear to matter as they ran with great gusto against a Dungarvan side that were struggling to cope with the raiding Ennistymon defenders and wing forwards. Arts take centre stage at Ennistymon CBS

ENNISTYMON CBS held its annual Arts week recently, with a series of events helping students access their own creativity and exposing them to new artistic experiences. Teacher Emma Jane Brown said, “We’re very lucky that management are very supportive of everything to do with the arts here in Ennistymon. “This was our third annual Arts week, we had a really great first one, last year obviously it was impacted by Covid, we were doing remote learning and everything was virtual. It was really fantastic this year to be able to do things in person.” Explaining what had taken place, Emma Jane added, “We started off with a podcast workshop with Ruairi McKiernan, who’s a Fulbright scholar and author and he has two podcasts himself. Our TYs and second years were at that and it was fab. “We also had Féile CBS on the Wednesday, which was sports activities, in their class pods outside. We had an ice cream van and …

Tom up to scratch as he collects national coding award

A NORTH Clare student is proving he is up to scratch when it comes to computer technology. Tom Dandoy, a third year coding student at CBS Ennistymon has been presented with an award in the National Scratch Coding Competition after developing his very own computer game. Tom’s game Spaceship Battles 3 is the final game in a trilogy that he has developed using Scratch programming which he has been learning in school. He was one of 34 finalists from 215 entrants in the competition which is being held as part of Technology Week, a nationwide festival of technology driven events aimed at students, parents and the public. On Wednesday the winners of the competition were announced, with Tom receiving an award for ‘Best Technical Sophistication” after impressing the judges with his game. Former INTO president becomes first Teaching Council Clare chairman

A FORMER Mullagh National School principal has made history by becoming the first Clareman elected as chairperson of the Teaching Council. Seán Mc Mahon, B.Ed, M.R.D. a graduate of Mary Immaculate College, Limerick and N.U.I. Galway has had an extensive involvement in education throughout his professional career. Since 2016, Mr McMahon served as deputy chairman of the Teaching Council, the statutory professional standards body for the teaching profession, which promotes and regulates professional standards. He was also chair of the council’s investigating committee in relation to Fitness to Teach during this time. Ennistymon CBS make hurling history

Bonfires blazed across North Clare on Tuesday evening, after Ennistymon CBS made history by capturing a first-ever hurling title for the school. A comprehensive 2-15  to 0-2 win over Mercy Mounthawk from Tralee saw the North Clare team capture the senior D crown and Corn Sean Uí hAnragain trophy at Neville Park in Rathkeale. Following a thrilling one-point win over Crescent Comprehensive in the semi-final, the North Clare outfit travelled to the Limerick venue on Tuesday as favourites. They were well on their way to making history at half-time, when they held a 1-7 to 0-2 lead, after playing against the wind. With Jason McCarthy in sparkling form at centre-forward and control held at midfield, thanks to the efforts of Simon Ralph and Keelan Sexton, the Tara Rynne-managed side dictated matters from the start.
