Ardscoil Rís and CBS Ennistymon bid for Munster Finals

With four out of five Clare representatives exiting their respective Munster Senior Post-Primary Championships this week, all eyes are on Ardscoil Rís (Senior A Hurling) and CBS Ennistymon (Senior C Hurling) who are bidding for provincial final places this Saturday. Ardscoil Rís’ 17-strong Clare contingent, along with mentor Paul Flanagan, will be determined to make amends for last year’s Munster Under 19A Final reverse to St Joseph’s Tulla as despite going on to secure All-Ireland honours, it was their only Harty Cup Final reverse in six attempts. Nine Banner natives saw action in their rousing quarter-final finish against Our Lady’s Templemore but they will be wary of a scorned Cashel Community School who suffered their only defeat against the Limerick college by a goal at the group stages only three months ago. Having already secured redemption to win the Dean Ryan honours, Ardscoil will require their best display of the campaign if they are to double the dose against Cashel …

HURLING: Final heartbreak for CBS Ennistymon

CBS Ennistymon 1-12 Coláiste Naomh Cormac 2-11 By Ivan Smyth A 60th minute Alex Kavanagh goal condemned CBS Ennistymon to their second All Ireland final defeat in the space of a week. Jason Daffy’s side looked set for All Ireland glory when MacDara O’Keeffe and Josh Guyler points moved them 1-12 to 1-10 against the 14 men of Coláiste Naomh Cormac. However, Adam Screeney, who was one of nine Coláiste Naomh Cormac players to have represented Offaly at minor level, fielded the next puckout as he powered through on goal. His rasping effort was blocked Kieran Daniels in the CBS Ennistymon goal. With the goal gaping Alex Kavanagh failed to make contact with the sliotar after the save. In the same passage of play Coláiste Naomh Cormac’s Robert Boland managed to turnover possession and arrow a crossfield ball to the unmarked Kavanagh as he unleashed an unstoppable missile of an effort to the top corner of the net. CBS Ennistymon …

FOOTBALL: Fitzpatrick double sees off CBS Ennistymon

Ennistymon CBS 0-8 Heywood CS 2-7 By Ivan Smyth At Duggan Park CBS Ennistymon’s dreams of a potential double are over as they suffered a five point defeat to Laois side Heywood CS. Two goals in a six minute spell from former Laois minor Shaun Fitzpatrick propelled Heywood CS to All Ireland glory. There was controversy surrounding the first goal as Fitzpatrick appeared to be inside the square when scoring his first goal of the game. A miscued shot from Heywood CS’ Brian Duggan fell short with Fitzpatrick on hand to punch to the net. There was no doubting the legitimacy of Fitzpatrick’s second strike as he scorched through the Ennistymon CBS before finishing to the bottom corner of the net. CBS Ennistymon summoned Brendy Rouine from the bench early in the second half as he made his presence felt at full forward. The nephew of Joe Joe Rouine saw a late 20m free blocked on the line by Heywood …

Former teacher thrilled to be involved in epic journey

Despite the relatively small numbers attending the school, CBS Ennistymon have punched above their weight both academically and on the GAA field, writes Ivan Smyth. Michael Clohessy spent 40 years in the school, serving the final years as Deputy Principal before retiring in December 2020. The former Maths and Business Studies teacher was delighted to be asked by Tara Rynne and Jason Daffy to help with their senior hurling and football squads before their respective campaigns commenced. Clohessy managed St Joseph’s Doora-Barefield to the All Ireland Club Hurling Championship in 1999 while he took them back to the showpiece event one year later as they lost out to Athenry. The 64-year-old hopes these talented bunch of players can create lasting memories just like he and those Doora-Barefield players did back in their pomp. “I have great memories and I’ll take them to the grave. These lads will keep these memories long after leaving the school. They will recall these great …

Tara hails toil and planning as CBS closes in on double

It’s rare to meet a woman at a schools game, Ennistymon CBS coach Tara Rynne tells Ivan Smyth ahead of the school’s All-Ireland final this weekend Tara Rynne’s Ennistymon CBS side travel to Duggan Park, Ballinasloe, this Saturday (throw in 2pm) as the school goes in search of a first ever Senior All Ireland title while she is part of the hurling management team that are also gunning to lift national honours in the same grade. She admits this is a unique situation for any school to find themselves in and one that has come about due to hard work and careful planning. “We couldn’t ask for it to go any better. It is hurling one week and football another with us. The lads take it all in their stride. Between the Dome and Dublin it was a very busy week for everyone but we are delighted to have come through both games.” Rynne has no shortage of final experience …

Guyler guides Ennistymon as double dream still alive

All-Ireland Post Primary Schools Hurling C Semi-Final Ennistymon CBS 3-24 St Malachy’s Belfast 0-7 WHITEHALL Colmcille GAA club played host to this one sided semi-final on Saturday afternoon as Jason Daffy’s charges eased into the All-Ireland C hurling final, reports Michael O’Connor. Their opponents in this final will be Scoil Colm from Kilcormac. The Offaly school accounted for St Killian’s, New Inn to book their place in the decider on Friday. The loss of Diarmuid Fahy in the football semi-final on Tuesday was an unfortunate loss to Ennistymon and he will now miss the remaining games in the season. However, the return from suspension of Josh Guyler allowed as efficient a scoring unit as exists in schools hurling to take St Malachy’s and stretch them to breaking point. When one sees, Rynne, Guyler, Woods and Mullins dictating matters from midfield upwards it is little wonder that Eugene Cullinan stayed on in the Inagh/Kilnamona hotseat for 2022. Mullins set the tempo …

Ennistymon and Tulla look to make All-Ireland finals

Eoin Brennan previews the All-Ireland secondary schools action this weekend with Ennistymon CBS and St Joseph’s Tulla looking to advance to the finals It’s All-Ireland Semi-Finals week in the senior post-primary schools competitions, with CBS Ennistymon leading the way with a commanding Senior C Football victory on Tuesday afternoon in the state-of-the-art Air Dome in Bekan. However, there’s wasn’t much time to soak up the unique atmosphere in the dome as once the final whistle went, the management team of Tara Rynne, Jason Daffy and Michael Clohessy were already plotting the hurling equivalent, once more against Ulster opposition in Dublin this Saturday. “We’re thrilled to be in an All-Ireland Final with this great bunch of players,” admitted Tara Rynne immediately afterwards. “I suppose we have a lot done between hurling and football in the last few weeks but have more to do. “There’s not much of a break until the All-Ireland Hurling Semi-Final on Saturday so hopefully the momentum stays …

Ennistymon CBS footballers reach All-Ireland final

Eoin Brennan was on hand for the Champion as CBS Ennistymon progressed to an All-Ireland final CBS Ennistymon 3-12 St Columba’s Stranorlar (Donegal) 0-6 CBS Ennistymon maintained their momentum-fuelled dual charge when powering to the All-Ireland Senior C Football Final at the expense of Ulster champions St Columba’s Stranorlar this afternoon. Played in the spectacular setting of the new Connacht GAA Air Dome in Bekan (Mayo), CBS Ennistymon rose to the challenge with a dominant display. Seven first half wides ensured only a 0-5 to 0-2 interval lead but the Munster champions hammered home their superiority on the turnover when Joshua O’Brien (2) and Sean Connelly raided for three goals in the space of seven minutes. Led by Sean Rynne, tireless wing-backs Liam Cotter and Brian McNamara and spare defender Marc O’Loughlin, the only downside for the North Clare school was an ankle injury for Diarmuid Fahy that forced he early retirement of the full-forward just before half-time. CBS Ennistymon …
