Permission denied for commercial works in Darragh

PERMISSION sought for works at a site off the N68 that already featured unauthorised development has been refused, writes Owen Ryan. Cos Wholesale Ltd has been denied planning permission to partially demolish, renovate and extend an existing commercial building at Darragh North. The Clare County Council planner’s report into the application noted that the subject site measuring 0.572 hectares is located in the rural townland of Darragh North. It is situated to the north of the N68 national secondary road at a point where the 100kmph speed limit applies. The planner’s report stated, “The site accommodates a petrol filling station (and associated retail outlet), a car sales garage and forecourt and a vacant commercial unit. “The area to the immediate east of the vacant unit comprises a rough graveled area with concrete hard stand areas on the other areas within the site. Jimmy makes his last delivery

ON Saturday morning, Jimmy Guinnane will leave his home at Toonagh around 5.30am and travel to Annacotty to pick up hundreds of loaves of Brennan’s bread, before spending the next 13 hours or so distributing them around Ennis and West Clare. He has spent thousands of days doing the same routine but Saturday will be the last time, as he finishes a job he has really enjoyed since beginning it 32 years ago. “I was working for Michael O’Sullivan before that in Corofin. Then I started in West Clare in 1987 with Brennan’s bread.” He says he is very grateful to all the customers and the friends he has made on the route over the years. “I love meeting the people, meeting so many people every day. You’d have the craic with everybody. When I …

While often referred to as a Limerick group, percussionist Dermot Sheedy is from Darragh and he spoke to the Champion last week from Nashville, where the group were working. “We were in Vancouver for a week, we played two gigs there for Celtic Fest and we came to Nashville the other day. We’re working with loads of loads of different producers and labels over here to see what we can do. We’re writing a lot of songs and laying them down, it’s basically music heaven over here, two of the lads were at Music Row yesterday which is like a big housing estate where every house is a studio.
