Clare footballers will be heading for Dr Cullen Park in Carlow for their qualifier game on the weekend after next.  Although considered to be the easiest of the potential opponents, at this stage in the competition, Clare will be taking nothing for granted. Clare will hope to build on the performance against Kerry in the Munster championship clash at Cusack Park a couple of weeks ago. Despite a solid display, they missed a glorious opportunity to pinch a rare victory over the men from the Kingdom. The date of the football game could prove problematic from an organisational point of view for Clare, should the hurlers beat Wexford in their qualifier encounter, which will take place at Cusack Park, Ennis on Saturday afternoon, with a 3.30pm throw-in. The Clare Champion-sponsored Clare Primary Schools hurling and camogie finals were played out in splendid sunshine at Cusack Park on Tuesday and Wednesday Hundreds of children from all over the county participated in 12 finals, which produced top class fare. In fact, judging by the skill level shown by the boys and girls augurs well for the future of  hurling in the Banner County. Sixmilebridge won the Division 1 title with a hard-earned victory over Inagh/Cloonanaha. In camogie, Flagmount/Dromindoora defeated Clonlara to win the Division 1 title. (Peter O’Connell) Clare 2-8 Waterford 2-8 IT felt like a defeat but Clare were eventually relieved to hold on for a draw in the Munster senior football quarter-final against Waterford in Cusack Park on Saturday evening. The replay will be in Dungarvan next Saturday, with a likely throw in time of 7pm. The Collins brothers, Seán and Podge, are also due to play with the Clare hurlers, in the Munster semi-final, the following day. Three minutes from the end of normal time in Ennis, Clare led by three points, 2-8 to 2-5 and it seemed that they would hold on for victory. However Waterford ran at Clare and kicked a trio of late points Shane Aherne (0-2) and top scorer, Paul Whyte, who kicked the equaliser. Joe Cooney (FG) is the first county councillor to be elected in the County Clare Local Election. With 2,843 votes, which is expected to be the largest vote in the county, Councillor Cooney’s vote was 1,258 over the 1,585 quota. Speaking following the announcement he said, “I’d a brilliant performance. I didn’t expect a performance like that”. He put the performance down to the hard work he has done for his electorate over the past five years. “I worked hard for the people in those five years. I think the vote today is a true reflection of that,” he said. As counters begin assigning his 1,258 surplus votes, Joe believes his two party colleagues Pat Burke and Joe Arkins will net the benefit of these, “both have done well, I think they stand a great chance and I think both of them will get elected”. A PLAN to show the All-Ireland hurling final on a big screen in Ennis has resulted in mixed reactions. It has been suggested the idea could negatively impact on pubs, hotels and restaurants that would otherwise benefit from the day, although members of the business community do not appear to see this as a material issue, according to town manager Ger Dollard. “The views of all members of Ennis Town Council have also been canvassed and there is unanimous support for such a proposal if it is financially and logistically feasible and would receive public support,” he said. Ennis Chamber CEO Rita McInerney said the overall consensus among members is the benefits of providing a big screen as part of a major event would outweigh any possible negatives.
