Clare footballers draw in Cusack Park

(Peter O’Connell) Clare 2-8 Waterford 2-8 IT felt like a defeat but Clare were eventually relieved to hold on for a draw in the Munster senior football quarter-final against Waterford in Cusack Park on Saturday evening. The replay will be in Dungarvan next Saturday, with a likely throw in time of 7pm. The Collins brothers, Seán and Podge, are also due to play with the Clare hurlers, in the Munster semi-final, the following day. Three minutes from the end of normal time in Ennis, Clare led by three points, 2-8 to 2-5 and it seemed that they would hold on for victory. However Waterford ran at Clare and kicked a trio of late points Shane Aherne (0-2) and top scorer, Paul Whyte, who kicked the equaliser. Footballers feature four debutants

THE Clare senior footballers starting team and subs were named after training in Cusack Park on Thursday evening ahead of Saturday’s provincial quarter-final meeting with Waterford in Cusack Park. Four players will make their Munster championship debuts while Joe Hayes returns in goals at the expense of Pierce Deloughrey, who was in goals for the league campaign. Jamie Malone, Ciaran Russell and Martin O’Leary are pencilled in to make their championship debuts at midfield, wing back and in the full forward line respectively. Podge Collins will also make his Munster senior football championship debut. His brother Seán, who played championship in 2009, has been named at wing forward while his younger brother will wear number 15. Emerging football talent squad plan

YOUNG footballers in Clare, who are overage for minor in 2015, are to be invited into what is called an Emerging Talent Squad. Liscannor footballer, Kieran Considine, will co-ordinate the programme. Parents and players will be invited to a meeting on Monday night next at the West County Hotel, where a full overview of the plan will be outlined. Clare senior football manager, Colm Collins, believes if the senior team is to develop in the years ahead, players need to be tutored properly. “The problem has been that players have come out of minor and have been left to their own devices. We feel that something needs to be done about this, so under the auspices of the Clare senior football team and in conjunction with the county board, with a view to bringing forward players to play for Clare, we have formed what we call an Emerging Talent Squad,” he explained. “It will be made up of players who …
