Armagh 3-11 Clare 1-11 TEN points down at half-time, Clare produced a stirring second half display to drag themselves to within two points of Armagh half way through the second half. However it wasn’t sufficient to reel in the visiting county and joint division 3 table toppers. A second Tony Kernan goal, four minutes from time, sealed the win for Kieran McGeeney’s team who had lead 2-8 to 0-4 at the interval having comprehensively outplayed Clare in the opening half. Ironically the home county started very well and led 0-2 to 0-0 seven minutes with Shane Brennan and Jamie Malone pointing from play. Armagh however preceded to take over and kicked 2-5 without reply. In fact Clare were held scoreless for 17 minutes. Clare 2-11 Waterford 0-3 Clare coasted into next Wednesday’s Munster U-21 football semi-final meeting with Tipperary in Thurles, following a facile win over Waterford in Miltown. Played in front of an attendance of 518, Clare restricted Waterford to just a single second-half point. Clare put the game away in the opening three minutes of the second half, when Jamie Malone raced through for a superb goal. Prior to that, Keelan Sexton had put over a nice point from play, set up by Dale Masterson. Malone won the subsequent kick-out and buried his second goal. Sexton followed up with a superb left-footed score, putting Clare into a 2-6 to 0-2 lead. Waterford had battled gamely in the opening half but following Clare’s burst after half-time, the confidence and ambition visibly drained from their opponents. Clare County Council is to lead an initiative to promote the Banner as a county of culture during 2016 to coincide with the designation of Ennis as the host town for next year’s Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. The initiative will incorporate the development of a year long programme of cultural events, to be promoted nationally and internationally, around the prestigious annual event which is expected to attract up to 400,000 people to Ennis in August 2016. The announcement was made at the March meeting of Clare County Council, at which the elected members endorsed the initiative “Securing Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann provides a unique opportunity for the people of Clare to celebrate their county’s rich cultural legacy and to promot it to a national and international audience,” said cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, John Crowe.

IT was a fairly cold winter in Clare, Met Éireann figures have indicated. Met Éireann defines winter as December, January and February and it found that mean temperatures for the period were 0.2 degrees below what would be expected. Meanwhile rainfall for the season was 17% above average, while the amount of sunshine was 12% above average. Met Éireann also released statistics for the month of February, which also reflected a cold and wet month. The mean temperature was nearly a full degree below average for the time of year, while the amount of rainfall was 20% above normal. There was five per cent less sunshine than average.

Commercial vacancy rates in Clare have increased, from 12.2% in 2013 to 13% 2014, according to new research published by GeoDirectory. The total number of occupied commercial premises in Ireland decreased throughout 2014 from 195,545 in Q1 to 194,642 in Q4. The new research is from the 2014 Q4 edition of GeoView, which is published quarterly. It is the second annual review of commercial vacancy rates in Ireland that not only provides national data but also analyses the data by quarter, by county, by province and across a broad range of sectors in the Irish economy. The review found that the national average commercial vacancy rate in Q4 2014 was 12.8%. This figure represents an increase in commercial vacancy of 0.4% since Q1 2014. This means that the average national commercial vacancy rate in 2014 was 12.6%. All four provinces recorded an increase in their overall vacancy rate in 2014. AS Clare prepare for their third league game of 2015 in Cusack Park on Sunday, they do so in the knowledge that if they are to avoid fighting relegation, this is a must win game. Sligo are in even more dire need of the points following defeats to Limerick and Fermanagh. In losing to Louth, Clare simply spilled possession much too often. Although they played decent football in the opening half, once Louth gained in confidence and stepped it up, Clare were left floundering. Losing Ciaran Russell to a black card and Cathal O’Connor to injury, adversely affected Clare. They had to move Shane McGrath to midfield and Shane Hickey to wing back, which resulted in their attack becoming unbalanced while they couldn’t win sufficient primary ball in the middle of the field. Clare experienced the largest proportional increase in its housing stock in 2014 compared to 2013. Almost 2.4%, [1,2325] more dwellings were added to the county’s residential stock in the GeoDirectory database in the year, which was over four times higher than the national average increase of 0.5%. At 419 dwellings per 1,000 of the population, Dublin’s housing shortage is continuing, according to the first annual report on Ireland’s stock of residential properties commissioned by GeoDirectory. This shortage is reflected by an increase in the average price paid (not mix-adjusted) for a home in Dublin, up by almost €28,000 (8.8%) year-on-year to €343,672 in 2014. The national average price paid for a residential dwelling in 2014 was €213,947. The average property price in Clare was well below this at €124,800. The highest average price by county was recorded in Dublin, €343,672, while the lowest average price was recorded in Longford, €74,154. CLARE and Cork go into their Round 2 league clash in Páirc Uí Rinn on this  Saturday evening (7pm throw-in) in the knowledge that defeat for either will leave them rooted to the bottom of the Division 1 table and facing relegation. They last played in the league two years ago at the Cork venue and, on that occasion, Clare turned in a powerful second half to record a 1-22 to 1-16 victory. The Leesiders led by five points at half-time in that game and could have been further in front at that stage. The Banner side had 10 wides in the first half. Goalkeeper, Patrick Kelly was one of the heroes on that occasion Clare’s half-backs had struggled in the opening half but, after the break, Brendan Bugler, Patrick O’Connor and Pat Donnellan were superb.
