A NUMBER of disturbing incidents relating to the treatment of immigrant domestic and childcare workers in this county have been revealed by Orla Ní Éili, project manager at the Clare Immigrant Support Centre in Ennis. “Some domestic and childcare workers in Clare have been held virtual prisoners in their employers’ homes,” she declared. Clare Immigrant Support Centre and Polish sports activists have organised an “anti discrimination” mini football tournament in Ennis on Saturday. At Clare Leisure World, Drumbiggle, local footballers can join the thousands of others worldwide to use the power of football to present a unified stand against discrimination, as part of Football People Action Weeks 2014. The FARE (Football Against Racism Europe) action weeks brings together groups of all sizes in over 50 countries to counter discrimination and celebrate diversity through the game. The FAI has run several events in the past weeks in Clare, as part of the Football People movement. On Saturday,  between 2 and 5pm, six teams with players from many different backgrounds will play on the astro-turf pitches followed by refreshments after the tournament for everyone to enjoy. ENNIS has been invaded by Vikings. However, this time it is not gold these Vikings were after but knowledge of how to set up Family Learning classes. 24 Norwegians visited Clare Family Learning Project work last week with their ultimate goal to set up Family Learning programmes in their region in Norway similar to what is being done locally in Clare. While here, the group gained valuable ideas through visiting classes in action, meeting parents who have already attended classes, and meeting family learning tutors and the partners that Clare Family Learning Project work with. The visitors from Nedre Eiker Municipality in Norway included 11 adult education teachers, two primary school principals, three kindergarten teachers, the head of all schools and kindergartens in the region, a volunteer co-ordinator, a cultural leader, a pedagogical leader and others interested in the notion of family learning.
