Clare County Council has been granted funding close on €400,000 from the EU to lure young people into considering maritime-related careers. The local authority’s Social Development Directorate, through its remit to increase overall participation levels in sport and physical activity, has been awarded the EU Erasmus+ programme funding as part of the Atlantic Youth Project. “As the only Irish partner in the European-wide project, Clare County Council is tasked with encouraging and developing the maritime culture of young Europeans, through the practice of water sports and maritime education at school,” explained Tim Forde, head of sport and recreation with Clare County Council. “Over the three-year term of this project, the local authority will facilitate the involvement of a significant number of second level school children with opportunities to participate in water sports in our county, whilst also participating in organised maritime education opportunities that will be EU-funded.” Mr Forde and Liam Conneally, director of social development, Clare County Council, represented …

CLARE County Council is “putting safety first” by repairing public lighting at an Ennis housing estate. Minister of State for Trade, Employment, Business, EU Digital Single Market and Data Protection Pat Breen has supported the local authority’s decision to repair the public lighting in the Mayard Estate on the Lahinch Road. “The lighting has been an ongoing issue for the residents in the estate, complicated somewhat by the ongoing process to have the estate taken in charge by Clare County Council,” said Deputy Breen. “Having worked with the residents of Mayard, which is part of the Shanballa Housing Development, I am only too aware of their concerns regarding the lack of public lighting, particularly with the onset of darker evenings as winter approaches. “I am delighted to receive notification that the local authority is putting safety first in this matter and have repaired the lights. Clare County Council has completed clean ups of significant illegal dumping sites at Ballyblood Bog, Tulla; Donail, Killimer; and Islandavanna, Clarecastle. More than 40 tonnes of illegally dumped waste were collected during the clean-ups were facilitated by national funding from the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment (DCCAE) supported by the Waste Enforcement Regional Lead Authority (WERLA). Anne Haugh, Director, Physical Development, Clare County Council, said, “Clare County Council’s Environmental Enforcement Team secured funding this year to allow a number of significant clean ups to take place across the county. THE chief executive of Clare County Council has said that the Government’s National Planning Framework (NPF) will “undermine” potential investment options in Clare and the Mid-West. Pat Dowling, who is also the chair of the Mid-West Chief Executive’s Group, said the region’s three local authorities will soon make a joint submission to Government stressing the need for the NPF to correct economic imbalances across the island. Among the targets outlined by the group, which includes representatives of Clare County Council, LIT, UL, IDA Ireland, Enterprise Ireland, Shannon Group and private enterprise, is the expansion of the Clare campus of UL, the development of a conference centre within the county, securing Shannon Airport as the designated airport for the Wild Atlantic Way and promoting indigenous industry in rural areas. TIDY Towns groups from across the county will gather in Ennis next month. Clare County Council will host a Tidy Towns workshop on Saturday, November 4 from 10.30am to 1pm in the council chamber at Áras Contae an Chláir, New Road, Ennis. The community training and awareness-raising workshop will feature a slideshow presentation, talk and local walk focusing on biodiversity and birdlife and how Clare’s Tidy Towns groups can achieve higher marks in the annual competition, as well help to protect birdlife in their local communities. Instruction will be given by experienced BirdWatch Ireland staff and local volunteers. Where there is local interest to erect nest boxes, guidance will be given on physical projects, involving the erection of Swift boxes and caller systems. BirdWatch Ireland will be outlining details of the Swift Conservation Project, which is aimed at reversing the decline in population numbers throughout Ireland. Clare County Council has closed the R471 Sixmilebridge to Clonlara road to through traffic in order to remove dangerous trees following ex-hurricane Ophelia. The road will be closed immediately west of Cooleycasey Cross to facilitate the works. The local authority has said it has taken the decision to remove these trees as they are in danger of falling following the storm. All motorists are advised to take alternative routes.

This helpline has been established in response to the ongoing threat of severe weather affecting Clare during Monday as a result of Hurricane Ophelia. Members of the public with water services queries should contact the Irish Water helpline number on 1850 278 278. Clare’s principal emergency response agencies are advising members of the public and services providers to avoid any non-urgent travel due to the Red Alert weather warning in place. The council, An Garda Síochána and the HSE have discussed the necessary plans for responding to the Status Red weather warning.
