CARRIGAHOLT fisherman Donal Farrell was stunned to find that he had a whale for company on the Shannon Estuary when he was fishing this morning. He was fishing, under the early morning sunshine, between between Kilcredaun and Ballybunion, which is located across the estuary on the north coast of Kerry. “It’s very unusual to see them in the estuary at all. You see them passing by Loophead in the Autumn but it’s very unusual to see them in the estuary,” Donal told The Clare Champion. “I’m not sure whether it was a Minky whale or a Right Whale. It was one or the other. It passed relatively close and it looked like it was heading in the river,” he explained. The Carrigaholt man said that the mammal was making rapid progress. “It was motoring and moving very fast. It looked healthy enough. It was probably just in with the high tide, feeding on mackerel. GARDAÍ targeting the sale and supply of controlled drugs in the Kilkee area,  yesterday discovered two separate cannabis cultivation operations. Gardaí searched a house in Lislanahan, Kilkee, where approximately 200 cannabis plants with an estimated street value of €160,000  were discovered. A man and woman, both aged 23 years, were arrested and detained at Kilrush Garda station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. In the second operation, gardaí searched a property in Tullaroe, Kilkee, where approximately 300 cannabis plants with an estimated street value of €280,000 were discovered. A man in his 50s was arrested and detained at Ennis Garda station under the provisions of Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996. These finds follow on from from a cannabis “grow” find in Carrigaholt area last week.

FOUR families in Kilcredaun, Carrigaholt were marooned on Monday when high tide hit the picturesque townland, which is home to an historic lighthouse. The flooding has resulted in the townland of Kilcredaun on the Loop Head peninsula being rendered effectively an island. A total of six houses were cut off by the flooding in recent days. The grounds of the nearby O’Curry’s Irish College has also been hit by flooding following the breaching of a wall. Meanwhile,  a number of houses in Carrigaholt village were hit by flooding when the village wall was breached at high tide. Locals are very concerned that their difficulties will be exacerbated should further storms hit the area in the coming days.
