GALLERY: Clare students taking part in BTYSTE 2022

CLARE has a strong representation as usual in this year’s BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition with 19 separate projects. Many of the projects draw inspiration from the students’ local area, a philosophy drummed into his students over the years by Mary Immaculate Secondary School Lisdoonvarna science teacher John Simms. “We believe very much in the principle that science should be local,” John told The Champion. “We will never be going for the big super-duper, millionaire-style projects. “We believe it’s very important for young people to have a love for and an interest in their own local area.” The same can be said of the projects from St Joseph’s Spanish Point and St Joseph’s Community College Kilkee. Young Scientist success for Lisdoonvarna students

STUDENTS of Mary Immaculate Secondary School in Lisdoonvarna scooped four awards at this year’s BT Young Scientist and Technology exhibition. Oisín Jackson won the second prize in the Junior Individual category of the Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Sciences. His project was entitled “An investigation into the differences in height of adjoining clints in limestone pavement in the Burren”. In this project he looked in detail at the difference in height of adjoining clints and seeing if prevailing wind may contribute to their formation. As well as getting this award he also got the Geological Survey Ireland special award. Ciara McDonnell was awarded highly commended for her project entitled “House searching by hermit crabs” This project was in the Junior Individual Biological and Ecological Sciences category. In this project Ciara was looking to see if the choice of shell by hermit crabs is related to shell size and their size and shell availability. Anna Mae O’Driscoll was awarded highly commended for …

Young scientists prepare for national exhibit

Students across Clare and South Galway are busy putting the finishing touches to their projects in the run-up to the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition 2015. From the science behind the voting in the Euro Vision to the correlation between mathematics and music, this year’s exhibition promises to be more exciting than ever with a huge range of projects on offer guaranteed to fascinate all visitors. There was a record number of entries this year making the 51st exhibition the biggest yet. Visitors will find 1,185 students displaying 550 projects, 22 of which are Clare entries, along with four more areas packed full of science and technology exhibits. Among those taking part are students from: Seamount College, Kinvara; Ennsitymon CBS, Rice College, Ennis; Kilrush Community School; St John Bosco Community College, Kildysart; Scoil Mhuire, Ennistymon; and, Ennis Community College, Gaelcholaíste an Chlaír.
