St Michael’s Kilmihil win the overall award

Photographs by Declan MonaghanTHE Clare Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships were held on the lands of Maureen and Thomas McGuire, Mullagh on Thursday and attracted a fine turnout of athletes.
The best overall school for the Tulley Cup were St Michael’s Kilmihil on 74 points and also finishing on 74 points were Ennistymon CBS followed by Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon on 73 points.
The first race of the day was the minor girls’ 1,500m. This was a great contest with Aishling Kelly (Spanish Point) always working hard at the front to take this title from Elaine Shannon (Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon) and Sharon Egan (St Michael’s Kilmihil). St Michael’s Kilmihil took the team title on 22  points from Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon on 27 points.
The junior boys’ 2,000m was dominated from start to finish by Eoin Looney (Spanish Point) with Jamie Roche (St Flannan’s) a very good second and Stephan Maher (St Flannan’s) third.  Ennistymon CBS took the team award on 38 points from St Joseph’s (Spanish Point) on 40 points and St Michael’s Kilmihil on 50 points.
The third race was the junior ladies over 2,000m with Áine Rouine (Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon) having a fine run to take the title from Lauren Keane and Gráinne Nolan (both Gael Choláste An Chláir, with Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon taking the team gold on 16 points.

Photographs by Declan MonaghanIn the junior boys’ 3,000m, the race was dominated by Kevin Mulcaire (St Flannan’s) who set out a very fast pace from the start. He came home a very comfortable winner over Mark Fennell (Kilrush) and Micheal Clancy (St Michael’s Kilmihil) with Gael Choláiste An Chláir taking the gold medals in the team award on 43 points from Ennistymon CBS on 55 points.
In the intermediate girls’ 3,500m, Jean and Niamh Clancy (St Michael’s Kilmihil) set out a very good pace for the first 500m with Laura Power (Coláiste Mhuire Ennis), Nollaigh Blake (St Michael’s Kilmihil) and Siobhan Nestor (Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon) all working hard as they made their way out for two 1,500m laps. The Clancy twins were in control up front and Jean powered her way around to a great victory over Niamh with Laura Power finishing strong to take third. St Michael’s Kilmihil took the team title on 14 points from Spanish Point on 35 points and Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon on 41 points.
The intermediate boys’ 4,000m was a much closer affair with Conor Rooney (Gael Choláiste an Chláir) and Karl Fitzmaurice (St Pat’s Shannon) taking this race along at a very good pace. With two small laps complete, Conor Rooney was starting to pull away and he went on to win easily with Jason McCarthy (Ennistymon CBS) producing a great finish to beat Eoghan Tubridy (St Michael’s Kilmihil) for the silver medal. St Michael Kilmihil took the team gold on 28 points from Ennistymon CBS on 37 points and St Joseph’s Spanish Point on 103 points.
In the senior girls’ (3,500m) race, Laura Egan (St Michael’s Kilmihil) produced a fine piece of front running to win in fine style from  Róisín Howley with the bronze medal going to Róisín Looney (Kilrush) and Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon) taking the team gold on 20 points.
In the senior boys’ (5,000m) Ian Slobody (St John’s Bosco Kildysart) made a very decisive move after 1,500m and was always in control at the front and he came home an easy winner with Conor Madigan (Kilrush) having a fine run to take the silver medal with Jonathon Martin (Rice College) third and Ennistymon CBS taking the team title on (38 points).
