This year’s Clare colleges senior camogie final pitted old rivals St Flannan’s against St Caimin’s in an eagerly anticipated game. Éire Óg GAA grounds in Ennis played host to the final.
Both teams boasted a number of recent Munster medal winners, with Clare’s minor team, and the quality of camogie on show was impressive.
Early exchanges were tight as both teams found it difficult to register a score. Kilmaley’s Katie Cahill found some space and slotted over a fine score for St Flannan’s. Nikki Kaiser chipped in with a point before minor captain Chloe Morey converted a free for St Caimin’s.
Nikki Kaiser’s good form up front continued as she poached a goal before Katie Cahill added her second point. Chloe Morey again added a point from a free to edge St Caimin’s back into contention leaving the score at half time 1-3 to 0-2 in favour of St Flannan’s.
The second half started at a blistering pace and despite an early point from St Caimin’s it was all one-way traffic with St Flannan’s exerting their dominance on the game.
Suzy O’Shea was in sublime form in goal and was alert to any danger. St Caimin’s moved their corner-forward out the field to try and stem the tide but it resulted in Clodagh Lawlor mopping up any attacks. Lorna Higgins was also exceptional in defence as she got to grips with Chloe Morey who was now playing at full-forward having started at centre back.
Christina Glynn was rewarded with her hard work and after a surging run saw her shot hit the back of the St Caimin’s net.
Captain Joanne Walsh fielded impressively on many occasions and her penetrating runs through the heart of the Caimin’s defence created numerous scoring opportunities. Nikki Kaiser added a goal and three points, with all scores coming from placed balls.
Sadhbh Corbett finished the scoring with an excellent goal after she combined well with the ever-industrious Rebecca Culligan as St Flannan’s dethroned the reigning champions on a score line of 4-7 to 0-3.
St Caimin’s had some fine performances on the day from Chloe Morey, Sinead Tuohy, Laura Mc Mahon and Leanne Boyle.
