BIG time boxing came back to the west of Ireland on Friday night, with a sell-out show at Leisureland in Salthill. There was a major Clare interest as Shannon’s David Ryan opened the Conlan Boxing/Top Rank promoted show, with a shut-out points victory over the Costa Rican Berman Sanchez. While Ryan won every one of the six rounds convincingly, his 39 year old opponent was a tough and thick-set fighter, and it never looked like the fight would not go the scheduled six rounds. The tone for the fight was set very early on, with Ryan delivering a number of snappy body punches, as he was on the front foot continuously. In the second the visiting fighter did land a couple of left hooks, but Ryan was still very much on top, and he delivered an excellent left hand mid way through the round, reflecting his superiority. IN late 2020, Shannon’s Ryan Nolan was on the brink of something big. A graduate of Inter Milan’s academy, the young centre back had been on the bench for Spanish club side Getafe twice in La Liga games. He was a couple of days away from making his club debut in the Copa Del Rey (Spanish Cup). He was on the brink of a career disaster. THERE were victories for Ennis boxers and brothers Edward and Paddy Donovan at the National Stadium in Dublin on Saturday night. They were fighting on Jay Quigley’s undercard, with the Donegal man making his first ring appearance since coming up short in his world title challenge against Demetrius Andrade in 2021. Edward had a hard fought six round contest against Frank Madsen, and while he ultimately secured a wide points victory, ‘the Dominator’ had to earn it against a tough opponent, who never stopped trying. Edward’s support was one of the features of the night, so enthusiastic at times that it almost looked like they’d climb in the ring to help their man. Referee Chris Maguire from the Wolfe Tones club in Shannon departed from the airport on Saturday evening to officiate London versus Carlow in the National Football League. While there is nothing unusual about this what does make it a particularly unique trip is for the very first time travelling referees were allowed to bring their own umpires. In Ruislip on Sunday five Clare men officiated over proceedings with Maguire bringing his trusted umpires namely Frank Mee from the Kilmurry Ibrickane club, Jamie Divilly from Wolfe Tones, Martin Frawley from Kildysart and Cian Collopy from Wolfe Tones. Having literally weathered the storm against the conditions and a black card by the break, the West Clare side turned the screw on the restart when raiding for 1-3 without reply culminating in a goal for substitute Julian Linnane by the turn of the final quarter at 1-7 to 0-5. All-Ireland Freshers 1 Hurling Championship Final University of Galway 1-26 University of Limerick 0-12 Nine Clare players were on show for Thursday’s All-Ireland Freshers 1 Hurling decider but only Tubber’s Tommy Fahy was left celebrating after his University of Galway side romped to a surprisingly facile victory over UL on home soil. Having been comprehensively beaten by UL in the Fitzgibbon Cup Final along with a minimum group defeat to the same opponents, the home side produced an emphatic 18 point turnaround to canter to a first Freshers 1 crown since 2005. Electric duo Liam Collins (1-13) and Colm Molloy (0-5) combined for 1-18 of UG’s tally while captain Gavin Lee were superb both in defence along with arrowing over two long range points. Heartbreak for UL as they were made to suffer a second successive Sigerson Cup Final defeat, this time after extra-time to UCC by 1-16 to 0-16 in an inclement Carrignore, Waterford on Wednesday evening. The goal which opened the scoring in spectacular fashion through a Dylan Geaney flick in only the fourth minute, predominantly separated the sides as UL chased the Corm college in vain until midway through the third quarter. Powered by a seven-strong Clare contingent led by inspirational captain Emmet McMahon, the Limerick college produced a remarkable seven point turnaround in as many minutes by the turn of the final quarter to hit the front for the first time. Kilmaley native, Richard O’Brien, came in for lavish praise following the success of Paul Nolan’s well-fancied newcomer, Cut The Rope (5/1), in the concluding four-year-old bumper at Naas on Sunday. O’Brien is a very successful trainer based in Ballingarry, County Limerick and it was on his advice that the Nolan camp purchased Cut The Rope, before he made his racecourse debut at the Kildare track. Cork jockey Eoin O’Brien did the steering aboard the son of Sea The Stars, who jumped off in front. Turning for home the pair still held the call and, quickening smartly off what was a strong enough pace, Cut The Rope held off the late effort of Gordon Elliott’s 7/4 favourite Ankud by two lengths. The first two home look decent and it was a good sign that they pulled half-a-dozen lengths clear of third-placed Cappucino. GORT boxer Cliona D’Arcy won the European Youth Championship 81kg+ title in Bulgaria this evening, defeating Ukrainian fighter Polina Cherenko. It was a fine display from D’Arcy, who four of the five judges having her as the winner, with only one giving the nod to the Ukrainian. Indeed, three of the five had the Gort woman winning every round. While Cherenko had a clear advantage in strength and size, D’Arcy had far better movement and frequently caught her opponent with clean shots. The Ukrainian came forward almost continuously, but she was made look rather predictable by the cuteness of the Gort teenager, who ended up winning in some style in front of raucous Irish fans.

GORT boxer Cliona D’Arcy is on the brink of a European gold medal. Cliona has qualified for the final of the 81+kg European Youth Championship final, with a victory over Polish fighter Weronika Maja Bochen. In the final she will face the Ukrainian fighter Polina Cherenko. The championships are being held in Sofia and Cliona’s final will be the last fight of today’s evening session, which begins at 3pm, Irish time. A stream of the fight will be available on the Irish Amateur Boxing Association’s website, www.iaba.ie. Ireland has had a great championships, with the team guaranteed at least eight medals.

TONY Kelly is one of only three hurlers from outside of Limerick to be named on the 2021 All Star team. The Ballyea man was named at corner forward and it is third All Star, with the others having come in 2013 and 2020. Kelly was in outstanding form during the 2021 season and his selection had been widely expected. Limerick won the 2021 All Ireland with some ease, and that has been reflected with an incredible 12 of their team being named All Stars. Other than Kelly, the only other non Limerick inclusions are Kilenny’s Eoin Murphy and Conor Prunty of Waterford. WITH Crusheen having successfully appealed the structure of the senior hurling relegation competition, Clarecastle chairman Niall Tuohy said his club are writing to the county board to express the view that the competition was not legitimate and must be deemed void for all four clubs that were involved. Clarecastle lost all their three games in the relegation competition, leaving them bottom of the four team group, behind Crusheen, O’Callaghan’s Mills and Clooney/Quin each of which finished on four points. While Crusheen were also to be relegated on scoring difference, they took an appeal to the Munster Council, as at the competition’s outset it was understood that scoring difference would not be used as a means of separating sides who were level on points. That appeal was successful and the matter has to go back to Clare county board for a resolution. “We were entered into a competition that has been deemed to have been improper and every one of the …

AN objection brought by Crusheen GAA club following its relegation from the senior hurling championship has been upheld at Munster Council level. The Crusheen appeal centred on the structure of the relegation competition, focusing on the use of scoring difference as a means of separating teams, something that had been ruled out at the competition’s beginning. With the Munster Council having upheld the appeal, the matter will now be referred back to Clare County Board for a solution. Crusheen were relegated after finishing the relegation competition on four points from a possible six. While they were level on points with both Clooney/Quin and O’Callaghan’s Mills, Crusheen were relegated as they had the weakest scoring difference of the three . However, at the outset of the relegation competition it was understood that scoring difference would not be used as a means of separating teams, and Crusheen had actually played two of their three games before there was a move to change …

THE hurling All Star nominations were announced this morning and there are three Clare men on the list, Rory Hayes, Tony Kelly and Cathal Malone. While not nominated for an All Star, Aidan McCarthy is on the three-man shortlist for young hurler of the year, alongside Eoin Cody of Kilkenny and Shane Barrett of Cork. All-Ireland champions Limerick have a full set of 15 players nominated and look set to dominate the team. In all nine different counties are included in the nominations. Minor C Camogie Championship Final Wolfe Tones 6-13 Parteen-Meelick 6-10 Wolfe Tones definitely earned their Minor C Camogie Championship breakthrough, having been tested to their optimum by a never-say-die Parteen-Meelick in what was a truly memorable decider in Fr. McNamara on Wednesday evening, Sharing twelve goals equally, supporters were not only afraid to take their eyes off it but even fearful of blinking in case they missed a goal. It was a compelling end-to-end contest that proved a superb advertisement for Clare Camogie as the standard on offer far exceeded expectations as both sides left everything out on the field in pursuit of some much-needed silverware. And yet considering the final scoreline, it’s perhaps difficult to believe that there were no goals at all until additional time in the first half. It would potentially have been a heavyweight showdown if the Killaloe-Bridgetown side were at their 2021 or ’22 levels while it will still be a battle, the loss of key players to emigration for Smith O’Brien’s should mean that Clarecastle possess the better balance to shade matters and top the group. Clooney or not Clooney, that is the question

On initial viewing, the race for the Fr. Murray Memorial Cup (intermediate camogie) appears fairly straight-forward. After all, with all three semi-finalists from 2023 (Tulla, Whitegate and Éire Óg) and senior demotee Clooney-Quin split evenly between the two groups, the business end overtly looks clear-cut. Clooney-Quin’s senior experience along with negotiating their way to intermediate glory as recently as 2021 makes them the stand-out candidates, with Tulla currently ranking a close second having contested back-to-back intermediate finals, three if you include the replay in 2022 against eventual champions Clarecastle/Ballyea. They won’t want to see another mid-Clare side join them in the second tier but for Tulla, it’s all about learning from their previous deciders and leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of reaching the promised land of senior. Whitegate were beaten finalists to Clooney-Quin in 2021 and actually meet them first this Thursday evening at 7pm, in what is potentially a Group A decider in Clooney and the same …

Clare camogie power base is still in the East

Current kingpins Truagh-Clonlara and Scariff-Ogonnelloe may have switched roles last October after the latter’s two year reign but having clashed in the last three finals, they will be overwhelming favourites to do so once more come October 19th. It’s up to the chasing pack to alter that perceived narrative as with only the finalists seeded for this year’s race for the McMahon Cup, the groups initially appear a bit lopsided. After all, with three of last year’s semi-finalists (Scariff-Ogonnelloe, Inagh-Kilnamona and Feakle-Killanena) pooled in Group B, the fact that there are two business end berths means that one major contender has to fall at the group stages. Scariff-Ogonnelloe’s vast experience of three titles in the last five seasons makes them the forerunners to maintain their perfect group record as since bounding back to senior level in 2017, they have progressed to the penultimate stage at a minimum. The resilience shown by Clare hurlers Ryan Taylor and Tony Kelly to battle back from serious injuries has been lauded by team physiotherapist for the last three years, Shane Malone. While Shane has attended All-Ireland homecomings in his native Kerry following All-Ireland successes, he described last week’s welcome for the Liam McCarthy Cup in Clare as “incredible”. St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield 2-14 O’Callaghan’s Mills 0-17 It really doesn’t matter if you lead early in a match or are chasing the game for lengthy spells but what does matter though is who is ahead when it counts the most and that’s at the final whistle. On Sunday morning out in Tulla the men from the Parish epitomised resilience and got their just rewards for never surrendering when grabbing the lead for the only time in the sixtieth minute to practically steal a cracking league final that was played in a hugely sporting manner. Éire Óg 3-20 Sixmilebridge 2-14 There’s always a certain level of respect between clubs but sometimes there’s also a level of contempt that is evident for all to see. The Banner County have had huge success in the sport with the Senior and Junior All Ireland titles residing in the county courtesy of the Coláiste Muire and the Munster Thunder clubs. The strength of the sport in Clare can be highlighted by the fact that four Banner players will represent Ireland in the tournament.
