Smith O’Brien’s swap strips for glad rags

MEMBERS of Smith O’Brien’s GAA Club will swap action on the playing fields for the catwalk to raise funds for a proposed  €500,000 investment in community facilities.
Friends and family members will strut their stuff at a fashion show in the Lakeside Hotel, Killaloe next Friday at 8pm.
Club PRO Joan O’Shea promises a great night of entertainment with a variety of fashion on display from shops in Killaloe, Ballina and Nenagh. Tickets can be purchased from committee members or local shops.
The project was officially unveiled last March by GAA president Christy Cooney. The plan, which charts development in the club from 2010 to 2015, includes the proposed construction of a hurling alley, all-weather facility adjacent to the existing GAA pitch and a major upgrading of existing clubhouse accommodation.
If the plan comes to fruition, the parish and community would be provided with new dressing rooms, meeting room, referee’s room, kitchen and catering facilities. The club also hopes to purchase additional land to accommodate new playing pitches. Other proposed developments include a covered stand, upgrading of the existing clubhouse and car parking, all of which would be fully accessible for people with disabilities.
Development committee chairman, Michael Culhane pointed out 30 years has elapsed since there was any large-scale development of facilities in Smith O’Brien’s.
“A sub-committee was formed in the club over 18 months ago and we have met once a month since then. We examined the needs of the club, facilities for players and spectators and the requirements of future members.
“Five areas of development were outlined over a five-year period. It is a massive undertaking considering the current economic downturn. However, this investment in our youth is vital for the future of our club.
“The club will be looking for the co-operation and generosity of everyone in the parish. Funding will also be sought from the National Lottery, Shannon Development, Munster Council, Clare GAA, Clare County Council and Government organisations,” he said.
