SHANNON Club captains for 2012, Lynn Kelly and Aidan Mannix drove in to office last week watched by a bit turnout of members.
There was a men’s 15-hole team-of-four modified scramble at Shannon over the weekend when the winners were Dermot Glynn (13) Donal Walsh (22), Ally Fleming (24) and Jermiah Walsh (2) with 49 points. In second place, with a similar score, were Adrian Tracy (18) Barry O’Riordan (17) Noel Purcell (17) and Mick Wall (15).
Last week’s Wednesday’s open singles winner was Paul McElligott (12) with 33 points.
Ennis
ENNIS seniors held a three-ball modified scramble last week when the winners, with 79 points, were Ferdie O’Donoghue, Larry O’Farrelly and Paul Mockler. They had one to spare over Maurice Walshe, Don Ryan and Michael Considine. In third spot, a further point back, were Brian Warner, Dick Burke and Joe O’Brien followed by Pat O’Reilly, Tom Fox and Aidan Guilfoyle. In fifth place, also on 77 points, were Conor Murphy, Eamon Murphy and Johnny Cullinan followed on 76 by Paddy Lane, Pat Rutherford and Paddy Cahill.
New seniors captain Willie Moloney will ‘drive-in’ at 10.30am this Thursday.
In the club weekend fourball, Paul Higgins and Paul Coote were the winners with 44 points from Cathal O’Gorman and Richard Keane on 43 with third spot filled by Tim McAllister and Luke Coote on 42 points.
East Clare
THE winners of the men’s two-ball scramble at East Clare on Sunday were Enda (14) and Martin McInerney (19), who had two shots to spare over Brian Lenihan (11) and Damien Carroll (16).
In the ladies’ nine-hole competition, the winners were Catherine Minogue, Ina Reddan and Geraldine McNamara from Siobhán Shanahan, Pat Williams and Mary Collins.
There will be a 14-hole singles competition for men this week, while the ladies will have a nine-hole competition on Sunday with the draw taking place at 12.15pm.
The winter league is continuing and the January competition is a 14-hole fourball.
Lahinch
IN the men’s singles at Lahinch on Saturday, Frank Considine (11) was the winner with 38 points from Don Dillon (14), who had a similar score. In third place was Enda Hegarty (18) with 37 points, while Ronan Cooney won the gross with 30 points.
Sunday’s men’s singles stableford competition was won by Paul Ralph (15) with 37 points from Paul O’Brien (5) and Ger Kelly (15), both of whom also scored 37 points.
Woodstock
IN the club singles at Woodstock at the weekend, Joe Casey (18) was the winner with 37 points from Tom Malone (18), who had a similar score. Thomas Barrett (18) was third with 34 points.
This weekend’s competition will be a club singles Stableford
Gort
THE singles Stableford competition at Gort at the weekend was won by Bob Hotchkiss with 40 points from John Sinnott, John Kelleher and Aidan Mullins each on 39. John Rodgers won the gross with 30 points.
The open singles last Monday was won by Trevor Cummins with 37 points, while the previous week’s competition was won by Kevin Mulkerrins with 40 points from John Ryan with 38 points.
There will be a men’s singles competition this weekend, while the ladies’ spring league is continuing until March.
Dromoland
THE Stableford competition at Dromoland at the weekend was won by Kieran Newman from Robert Deegan with Con Ryan in third place. Philip O’Sullivan won the category for over 18 handicappers. There will be a similar competition this weekend, while the winter league will begin on Monday next.
Portumna
THERE was a good entry for the men’s 14-hole competition at Portumna at the weekend. Ger Lynch (6) was the winner of the 0-10 category with 33 points. Ollie Flanagan (14) won the 11 to 14 category with 35 points, Brian Fahy (16) won the 15-18 category with 33 points, Martin McDonagh (22) won the 19 and over category with 31 points while the seniors section was won by John Holohan (21) with 29 points.
The monthly three-ball continues until April, while the drive-in by captains, Frank Ryan and Ena Moran, and president Mike Carty will take place on Sunday, February 5.
Spanish Point
LAST Sunday, the official 2012 drive-in for captain, Noel McMahon, and lady captain Nuala Kilroy took place and over 60 members, family and friends attended.
For the past number of years, the men’s driver used for this ceremonial occasion is an old-style persimmon club, beautifully refurbished, donated by the late Austin Skerritt, who designed the current lay-out and it was used by him in one of the British competitions. The weather conditions were ideal and a nine-hole scramble followed. The winners were Tony Crowley, Niall McMahon, Rose Kerrison and Fergal Hehir, followed by Cathal Whelan, Brendan Reddan and Maura Burke, with third spot filled by Brian O’Loughlin, Martin Davis, Valerie Shannon and Stephen Cunningham. Despite the heavy rain over the past month, the underfoot conditions are excellent and with full greens in play all society outings have gone ahead and several more have been transferred to the club. Time sheets are available in the clubhouse.
Doonbeg
DOONBEG society will have an outing to Doonbeg Links this Sunday, when the tee will be available from 10.12am. to 11.30am. Tee times can be booked from Tom O’Dea at 086 2799254.
Pitch and putt
THE New Year’s Day stroke play competition at the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club was won by Denis McElligott with the gross won by Marty Fawl. The winner of Sunday’s competition was PJ Considine with Timmy Sullivan winning the gross.
There will be a club meeting on this Sunday.
