Massive medal haul in Nenagh


THE Munster Senior, Junior and Masters Men’s and Ladies’ indoor Championships were held at Nenagh Indoor Arena at the weekend and Clare athletes gave outstanding performances, taking home 16 gold, 18 silver and 10 bronze medals. Marian AC won the Munster Junior 4 x 200m relay.
In the senior ladies, four Clare athletes were in action and in the 800m, Grace Eade (Ennis Track) captured the gold medal. In the 1,500m, three Clare athletes were in the final with Sharon Rynne (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) producing a big performance to take the silver medal with Becky Coughlan (Ennis Track) a very good third and Noreen Mackey (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) fourth.
In the 3,000m, Sharon Rynne captured another silver medal with Becky Coughlan taking the bronze medal and Noreen Mackey finishing fifth.
In the senior men’s 60m hurdles, David Courtney (Ennis Track) took a silver medal with another Ennis Track athlete, Micheál Keane, taking silver in the 800m. 
Keith King (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) competed in four events where he captured the gold medal in the high jump with a leap of 1.70m, a double silver medal in the triple jump and pole vault and a bronze medal in the long jump with a leap of 6.26m.
In the 56lbs for distance, Michael O’Brien (Tulla) won the gold medal with a throw of 6 .08m.
In the junior ladies 800m, Harriett Flynn (Shannon) went out hard from the start and maintained it for four laps to take the gold medal ahead of Emer Hillery (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) with Laura Power (Ennis Track) a very good fourth.
In the 1,500m, Harriett Flynn again produced a fine piece of front running to take another gold medal with Emer Hillery again having to settle for the silver medal.
In the junior men’s 400m, William Flynn (Shannon) won a silver medal in 53.56 with Ian Slobody (Kilmihil) in fourth spot.
In the 200m, Mark Boland and Cormac Lynch (both Marian) won the silver and bronze medals. Both athletes teamed up for the 4 x 200m finals along with Cian O’Brien and Darragh Crowe to take the Munster junior relay title in 1.37:11.
The Clare masters swept the boards in Nenagh with Aishling Power (Ennis Track) winning the O-40 800m, Cushla Murphy Hehir (Marian) took gold in the O-50 200m and silver in the 800m.
In the masters men’s O-35, Brian Spring finished fourth in the 60m and he came away with a bronze medal in the 200m, while in the O-40, gold went to Trevor White (St Cronan’s) in the 1,500m. He also captured a bronze medal in the 60m.
In the Clare Masters O-45, Richard McArthur (St Cronan’s) came away with two gold medals winning the 60m and the 200m and later in the afternoon, he won silver medals in the high jump and long jump.
Tommy Greene (St John’s), competing in O-45, was the outstanding master taking three gold medal the high jump 1.45m long jump (5.08m) and the 35lbs for distance.
In the masters O-50, another Clare athlete had outstanding success. Martin Fitzpatrick (St Mary’s) came away with gold in the shot putt (10.75m) and the 35lbs for distance with a throw of 7.27m.
In the men’s 3,000m, Eugene Moynihan (Marian) had to settle for the silver medal with Michael Quinlivan (Tulla) taking a silver medal in the 1,500m and bronze in the 800m O-50.
In the masters men O-55 James Sexton (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) had to be at his best to capture a silver medal in the 800m and 1,500m and he finished off the day with a bronze medal in the 3,000m in a time of 11.20s.
In the O-60, Tom Jones (Ennis Track) competed in the 28lbs for distance and over three rounds, he came away with a silver medal with a throw of 8.06m.
In the O-65, Crusheen native and Marian AC athlete, Gerry O’Connell captured the gold medal with a throw of 7.98m.
