Local success at North Munster championships

THE North Munster Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships were held over two days in Castleisland and UL Limerick with Clare athletes capturing 29 gold, 18 silver and 11 bronze.

In the minor boys’, Tony Odubote (Rice College) won the 75m hurdles but he had to settle for second spot in the 100m and 200m. Patrick O’Rourke (Lisdoonvarna) won gold in the 1,500m and finished second in the 800m, with Kevin Caulfield (Tulla) taking gold in the shot putt. In the junior girls’ 800m, Caoimhie Harvey (Kilkee) won the gold ahead of Aisling Kelly (St Joseph’s Spanish Point).

The positions were reversed in the 1,500m. In the junior girls’ 1,200m walk, Anagharad Loughnane (Gael Scoil Luimnigh) won gold and she also won gold in the discus and shot putt. Lauren McConway (Coláiste Muire Ennis) won the javelin Eoin Looney (St Joseph’s Spanish Point) won gold in the junior boys’ 1,500m in Castleisland.

On day two in UL, he finished second to Sean Collins (St Flannan’s) in the mile, while Cathal O’Brien (Rice College) won the long jump, Alice Akers (Scariff CC), won gold in the intermediate girls’ hammer and she captured gold in the discus. Laura Power (Coláiste Muire Ennis) recorded four big wins when taking the 800m, 1,500m, 1,500m steeplechase and 3,000m. Rachel Clancy (Kilkee) won the triple jump, high jump and shot putt.

There was a big number of intermediate boys from Clare schools. Ronan Barry (St Flannan’s) won gold in the 400m; Kevin Mulcaire (St Flannan’s) won the 800m, 1,500m, 3,000m; Sean Collins (St Flannan’s) won the mile and 1,500m Steeplechase and Paraic McNamara (St Flannan’s) won gold in the long jump.

Kaderi Karimu (GaelCholáiste an Chláir) won the triple jump and Clare inter-county Minor Footballer Eoin Hanrahan (St Flannan’s) won both the shot putt and discus.

In the senior girls, there were big wins for Niamh Markham (St Flannan’s) in the 800m, ­Jessica O’Connor (Coláiste Muire Ennis) in the 400m hurdles and Claudia Loughnane (GaelCholáiste) in the 3,000m walk.
In the senior boys, there was gold for Cormac Lynch (St Flannan’s) in the 200m and silver in the 100m. Karl Fitzmaurice (St Pat’s, Shannon) won gold in the 5,000m and silver in the 2,000m steeplechase. Seamus McMahon (St Flannan’s) won gold in the hammer and discus, while Conor Foley Ellis (Kilmihil AC) and Gaelcholáiste Luimní) won gold in the shot putt and silver in the javelin.
