Late goal wins title for Kilmaley

Kilmaley 1-3   Newmarket 1-2

SUPPORTERS were treated to a thriller when Kilmaley and Newmarket battled it out for the U-13B Shield title. In the end, it was Kilmaley who claimed the prize, despite the fact that Newmarket were in front for most of the match.

Newmarket’s Michelle McMahon opened the scoring in the 11th minute when after an impressive solo run, she hit an unstoppable shot to the net.
Play then moved to the other end of the pitch where Ciara McCarthy pulled off a great save, with Kilmaley’s Sinéad Rooney converting the resultant 45’. Within the next two minutes, Newmarket added two points from the stick of McMahon, one from play. Kilmaley’s Caoimhe Carmody cut Newmarket’s lead to three points on the stroke of half-time.
The second half was played at a frantic pace as both sides upped the tempo from the throw-in. Caoimhe Carmody pointed to cut Newmarket’s lead to two. Newmarket’s celebrations when they goaled in the 20th minute were short-lived as a free out was awarded for a square ball. Victory still seemed to be heading Newmarket’s way when Ciara McCarthy pulled off a fantastic save in the last minute of normal time but Kilmaley had other ideas and laid siege to the Newmarket goal. They got their reward deep in injury time when Carmody’s ground stroke found the Newmarket net. Newmarket tried hard to find the equaliser but time was not on their side.
