Jet skiers urged to obey bylaws

JET ski operators on Lough Derg are being urged to comply with Shannon Navigation bylaws by observing existing speed restrictions near swimmers, anglers and small boats.
The request was made this week by Killaloe Coast Guard chief officer, Joe Doolan, following difficulties with jet skis on the lake on Sunday.
Mr Doolan received a call from Valentia MRCC on Sunday, who had also requested Killaloe gardaí to respond, after a call about unsocial and possible dangerous and disruptive behaviour in the Lough Derg Area.
Killaloe Coast Guard launched its rescue rib and assisted gardaí at Two Mile Gate by observing and speaking to multiple jet skiers.
It was also pointed out that there is an issue with position of buoys at the beach area at Two Mile Gate, presenting a danger for children swimming close to the shoreline.
Speaking to The Clare Champion, Mr Doolan acknowledged the markers indicating the swimming area at Two Mile Gate need to be moved out further in the water by the relevant authority.
However, he stressed that regardless of any marker, jet skis should not operate over 5kmp/h within 200m of a bridge or jetty and within 100m of a lock, harbour, moored vessel or in a canal.
He noted it is vital for all pleasure craft operators to wear a lifejacket and to observe Shannon Navigation bylaws by reducing speed near swimmers, anglers and small boats.
As part of its compliance work, the coast guard unit visits schools to educate people on the importance of adhering to the bylaws.
While the unit had no difficulty playing its part informing jet skiers of the relevant rules and regulations, he admitted members would prefer if callouts of this nature could be avoided through proper knowledge and understanding of the bylaws.
