As the Munster Handball Championships progress, local handballers, both boys and girls, are rising to the occasion and confirming Clare as a leading county in this discipline
In the girls’ U-13 singles, Bridin Dinan, Tulla, displayed some great skill to capture the Munster title by defeating Cork’s Ellen Murphy, 15-8, 15-8.
The girls’ U-15 doubles saw Evelyn Duggan and Aoife Tuohy combine to take on Cork’s Nicole Culloty and Niamh Murphy in a hard-fought battle, which saw the thrilling encounter conclude with the Banner ladies coming out on top, 15-10, 15-8.
There was continued success for Clare girls in the U-14 singles when Kilkishen’s Ella Donnellan defeated Emma Harrington of Cork, 15-2, 15-3. Ella displayed superior skill and power throughout the game to overcome the rebel challenge and progress to the All-Ireland series.
In the girls’ U-16 doubles, Doireann Murphy and Clodagh Nash powered their way to victory over the Kerry pairing of Michaela O’Donoghue and Aishling O’Brien on a score of 21-2, 21-3.
Fergal Coughlan from Clooney represented Clare in the boys’ U-16 and continued the success by defeating Daragh Lyons of Waterford, 21-11, 21-14.
The boys’ U-17 doubles saw Sean Donnellan and Ciarán Cooney against Cork’s Tadgh Dunne and Brian Sheehan in a close contest which saw the Clare boys power their way to success on a score of 21-12, 21-10.
In the all-Ireland minor semi-final Kilkishen’s Colin Crehan made the long trek to Tyrone to play Gabhain McCrystal in a thrilling encounter that captivated those lucky enough to witness the game.
Colin showed great determination and composure to gain victory in a nail-biting tie-breaker, with the overall score 21-16, 16-21, 21-18.
