The Munster Group Clare Community Games athletic finals were held in bright sunshine at Lees Road on Sunday before one of the biggest attendances to date.
Bunting, banners and flags all added to the atmosphere before the 2,000 finalists from all parts of the county battled it out for honours and for the chance of representing Clare at the national finals in Athlone in August.
At the outset, the Tulla Pipe band led the parade of the various areas and this was followed by the opening ceremony.
Chairman Pat Taylor welcomed all present including the mayor of Clare, Pat Hayes, mayor of Ennis, Peter Considine and Padraic McNicholas representing the Munster Group, new sponsors of Clare Community Games. He also welcomed the competitors and officials from 35 areas across the county.
Mr Taylor acknowledged all the volunteers who worked throughout Saturday to prepare the final venue.
Mayor of Clare, Pat Hayes paid tribute to all who have been involved in the promotion of community games for the past 41 years. He admired the work they had done in bringing the games to all corners of the county and pointed out the importance of the facilities at Lees Road on occasions like this.
Ennis mayor Peter Considine also paid tribute to all involved in the promotion of the games across the county.
Munster Group managing director Padraig McNicholas expressed delight at their association with the Clare games and he too paid tribute to the volunteers for their efforts.
The torch was carried by Tony Odubote from Ennis St John’s and the pledge was read in Irish by Nadia Buczek and in english by Da Both.
