Food art, glorious food art

A UNIQUE exhibition on the art of food is currently on display in the gallery at Glór.

Food Art, Glorious Food Art was opened by the Minister for Defence, Tony Killeen last Friday and will remain on exhibition until December 31.
In October 2009, Glór held a successful art exhibition on the subject of flowers, entitled Burst Into Bloom.
“Not only was the exhibition a financial success, with many of the pieces sold, but it achieved something much greater, uniting the community of County Clare through art. By creating an exhibition of art with a universally understandable and enjoyable subject matter and a low price point, Glór succeeded in bringing the experience of art to a wider public, and this year we are seeking to continue on this trajectory with an exhibition based on the simple subject of food: Food Art, Glorious Food Art,” a spokeswoman for Glór said.
She continued, “A constant of our daily lives, food, in all its forms, has proved to be a ripe source of inspiration. Think of the luxurious Dutch food paintings of the seventeenth century, displaying sheer opulence through bulging, ripe fruit and vegetables, and an extensive variety of fish and meat. These were rich in symbolism but also created the visual vocabulary still in operation today. Images of food have been gloriously uncomplicated, with Vermeer finding a delicious beauty in the simplicity of bread and milk for his masterpiece The Milkmaid.”
Artists taking part in this exhibition include Jean Regan, Brian McMahon, Dorothy Ledwith, Richard Sharpe, Tom Prendergast, Jean Bardon, Paul Lynam, Siobhán Hyde, Cliona Doyle, Mike O’Connor, Mike Lewisohn, Bernard Dowd, Mimi Kern, Adam Pomeroy, Walter Verling, Declan Greene, Hilary Gilmore and Sean Moloney.
