Fahy wins Bernie Meaney Shield

OLYMPIC Harriers’ Jason Fahy recorded his first victory in Kilmurry McMahon at the 35th Annual St Mary’s 5km Road Races, incorporating the Bernie Memorial Race, which were organised by St Mary’s Athletic Club, on Sunday.
The event attracted over 100 competitors and Fahy won the Bernie Meaney Shield in a time of 15mins.05secs. The runner-up spot went to Liam Markham, Ennis Track, (16mins.28secs) and he was followed by Martin Corcoran, Craughwell (16mins.36secs).
Marian Burke, St Mary’s, captured the ladies’ 5km title in 19mins.37secs. Claire Madigan, St John’s, finished with a big sprint in 19mins.48secs to take the silver medal and she was followed by Niamh Markham, Ennis Track, ahead of Sharon Rynne, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, with St Mary’s taking the team title ahead of Ennis Track.
Pat Hogan, Ennis Track, finished very strong and claimed the masters’ O-40 title in 18mins.03secs, with Michael Kenny, St Mary’s, second and Mick Rooney, Ennis Track, in third spot.
There was another big performance from Ambrose Heagney, Kilnaboy, to capture the O-45s title in 17mins.38secs, with Iggy Landers, St Cronan’s, second in 17mins.53secs, followed by Martin Clancy, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, in third spot.
In the O-50s, Eugene Moynihan, Marian, produced a big finish to retain the title in 17mins.13secs from Tom Mackey, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, and Ger Griffin, Ind.
Tommy Madden, Marian, won the battle in the O-55s ahead of last year’s title holder Denis Meaney, St Mary’s, with the O-60s going to T J Beatty, Loughrea, ahead of Terry Burke, St Mary’s.
The junior men’s title went to Jack Larkin, Galway City Harriers, who finished in a time of 17mins.40secs, with Noel Garry, St John’s, second, followed by his clubmate Shane Keane.
The team award for the Tommy McCarthy Cup was a fine contest with Ennis Track recording a great victory with a total of 43 points, followed by Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare on 52 points and St John’s, last year’s winners, on 54 points.
Aaron Kelly retained the James Hanrahan Memorial Shield for the first St Mary’s athlete and he beat the 2007 title-holder Denis Meaney, with John Paul O’Neill in third spot.
Hillary Cunningham, St Mary’s, won the masters’ ladies’ O-35 in 25mins.20secs from Carmel Clarke, Loughrea, with the O-40s going to Hilda O’Connor, Ennis Track, in 23mins.06secs and the masters O-45 title going to Christine Organ, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare in 22mins.09secs.
The junior ladies race resulted in a big win for Helen Roche, Ennis Track, in 21mins.24secs, with Niamh Donnellan, Kilmihil, second in 23mins.05secs.
