The Clare Athletics Association juvenile (U-9 to U-19) plus intermediate and U-23 cross country championships were held on the lands of the Moroney family Sixmilebridge at the weekend.
The championships were hosted by Olympic Harriers in wet and windy conditions over a testing course with big fields of athletes in all races.
There were some outstanding individual performances and Ennis Track captured the Clare athletics association Shield for the best overall club with 77 points from, Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare on 56 points and St Mary’s on 54.
In the intermediate and U-23 ladies all-in-one race, Claire Madigan (St John’s), running in the U-23 event, was very impressive when taking the title. She led from start to finish.
In the intermediate ladies’ 4,000m, three girls made and early break, Becky Coughlan, Cushla Bríd Hehir (both Ennis Track) and Noreen Mackey (Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare). Over the two laps, these three girls were together for almost the entire race before Cushla Bríd Hehir made a decisive move with 600m remaining to take this title from Becky Coughlan and Noreen Mackey.
The intermediate team award went to Ennis Track Club on 14 points with, Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare second.
The intermediate men’s race was run over a distance of 8,000m and over five laps. Three athletes made an early break on the first lap Brian Murphy, Michael Maher (both Ennis Track) and Fergal Smithwick (Marian), with the chasing group led by Julia Cesar F Castro, Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare, Paddy Quinn, Aidan Kearney, Martin Glynn all Ennis Track.
With two laps complete Brian Murphy was beginning to pull away with Fergal Smithwick giving chase and Julia Cesar F Castro now having moved into third spot and over the next three laps the positions never changed with Murphy easily taking the title.
Ennis Track came away with the team title on 16 points from, Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare A on 40 and Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare B on 51.
The juvenile races attracted a fine turnout, this being day two of the uneven ages. There were huge entries in all races, which led to great competition.
