Donovan qualifies to represent Ireland

ENNIS teenager Patrick Donovan, who boxes out of Our Lady of Lourdes Club in Limerick, qualified to box for Ireland in the European Championships, when he was victorious at the National Stadium at the weekend.

Ireland will host the European Championships at the end of July and to prepare for the competition, the Irish squad will depart for Malta this weekend, where they will spend the next six weeks.

Competing in the boy 3, 44kg division, Donovan beat Luke Delaney from Riverstick in Cork in the quarter-final, Michael McDonagh from Mayo in the semi-final and John Kavanagh from Westside in Dublin in the final. The win marked the 13-year-old’s third Irish title.

His brother, Edward, reached the boy 2, 29kg final, where he lost on a split decision to Barry Reynolds from Belfast.
