Division 6 League title for Kilmurry Ibrickane

Kilmurry Ibrickane 0-9   O’Curry’s 1-5

AT half-time, it looked as if Kilmurry Ibrickane would have no problem capturing the 2013 Division 6 Football League title. At that stage, they led 0-7 to 0-0, with O’Curry’s not clicking in front of goal. Ironically, the county’s second most-westerly club kicked eight first-half wides, which indicates that they weren’t completely outplayed; they just couldn’t score.
At the other end of the Kilmihil pitch, Senan McCarthy, Michael Frawley, Keith Sexton and Martin Cahill shot Kilmurry into a convincing lead.

The sizeable Kilmurry Ibrickane attendance in the crowd sat back and waited for their team to obliterate O’Curry’s on the resumption.

Michael Frawley stretched their lead to 0-8 to 0-0 a minute into the second half but that was their second-last score. The winners didn’t score again until the 25th minute, when Keith Sexton kicked his second point from play.

In the interim, O’Curry’s got going, albeit with 14 men. Michael Carmody was sent off, 16 minutes from time, on a second yellow card. The O’Curry’s veteran was dismissed following a tussle with Kilmurry’s Michael O’Doherty.

At that stage, the winners led 0-8 to 0-2, with Damien Carmody and James Troy scoring for O’Curry’s early in the second half.

Troy added a further brace, with Seán Murphy also pointing for O’Curry’s, leaving three points in it, 10 minutes from full-time. Sexton’s 25th minute point extended Kilmurry’s advantage to four points. As it turned out, they needed that cushion. Ryan McMahon goaled for O’Curry’s in injury time, following a quickly taken free from Colin Lynch.

However, Kilmurry had enough of an advantage to secure the win and claim the title.
