IN the wake of Senators Fidelma Healy Eames and Paul Bradford losing the party whip for voting against the proposed abortion law this week, Clare Senator Martin Conway has benefited.
He now takes on the third most senior role in the Upper House and has been selected to become the Seanad spokesperson on Justice, Equality and Disability, filling the shoes vacated by Paul Bradford.
Speaking about the appointment, which was made on Wednesday, Senator Conway said, “It is a significant promotion and I’ll be handling all justice-related legislation going through the Senate.
“While I’m delighted that the Taoiseach and the party have promoted me to this position, I am sorry that it has happened in this way. The position was available and someone had to get it.
“It will give me significant exposure in dealing with the intricacies of legislation and I will be responsible for steering this legislation through the Seanad,” he said.
