Controversy reigns as Tulla denied at death

Dr. Harty Cup Round 2
St Joseph’s Tulla 0-17 Cashel Community School 0-17

After an opening day defeat to Cork school Blackrock, the pressure was firmly on Tulla to deliver in Cappamore. Showing tremendous character against a quality Cashel side they managed to stay in the game throughout thanks to an outstanding defensive display by fullback Fionn O’Gara and a series of top drawer saves from Broadford’s Jack Lovett.

It was the player affectionately known as ‘Fog’ though that towered above everyone else on the field and was quite simply majestic all afternoon. Decisive hooks, critical blocks and booming clearances were the order of the day from the Clooney-Quin player.

When Cashel did manage to break through the Tulla rearguard, they met a wall of resistance in Lovett. On three occasions the netminder came to the rescue, firstly denying Briain O’Donoghue with a brave point blank save in the 15th minute, then thwarting corner-forward Ryan O’Sullivan just before the interval and finally expertly diving full length to prevent sharpshooter Colin Bourke from rattling the net.

Trailing from minute one until the 43rd, Terence Fahy’s charges never dropped their heads, never lost their composure and always stuck to the gameplan. They had leaders all over the field and even when they trailed by double scores on not one but two occasions in the opening half, they refused to yield and inspired by a superb Matthew Corbett first half display, only trailed by three at half-time on an 0-11 to 0-08 scoreline. For that opening period it was predominantly backs to the wall stuff for Tulla as they played into the blustery conditions.

When play resumed for the second half, a couple of beauties by Cathal Leamy and Michael Vaughan had the game level for the first time. From here until the finish, the match ebbed and flowed with both schools having opportunities to open up a decisive lead. That never materialised though and points were traded like boxers trading blows. The Tipperary school did manage to open up a two point lead with just over three minutes remaining. A close range Jerry O’Connor free was followed by a monster Matthew Corbett conversion of a placed ball and with 60 seconds of the allocated additional time remaining, the sides were deadlocked at 0-17 points apiece.

There was as there often tends to be late drama and ultimately one has to question referee Tom McLynchey. Announcing a minimum of two minutes to play for everyone to hear, the Tipperary school went on the offensive hoping to fire over a dramatic winner.

A long booming dangerous delivery was sent in but Corbett who had taken up centre-back duties for the closing minutes, plucked the sliotar from the sky, evaded the first challenge and was bundled to the floor.

The referee blew for the free with twelve seconds left of the announced time. However in a baffling decision the referee didn’t allow the free to be taken and instead blew his full-time whistle much to the dismay of the Tulla line who unsurprisingly surrounded the official demanding an explanation. None was forthcoming though, with a share of the spoils the final outcome.

Tulla will face Charleville next and know only a victory will do if they are to extend their journey in this year’s Harty Cup but were denied a last gasp opportunity to win by what can only be described as an unorthodox refereeing decision.
