Dr. Harty Cup Group 4 Round 2
St Colman’s Fermoy (Cork) 4-13 St Joseph’s Tulla 0-14

St Joseph’s Tulla’s Dr. Harty Cup defence received a sobering start when four timely goals sucker-punched the holders as St Colman’s cemented their place in the last eight in Knocklong on Wednesday afternoon.
With only two survivors from last year’s unforgettable breakthrough campaign in contrast to seven from their opponents, Tulla’s young side will still be disappointed by the preventable manner of those goals.
Jamie Magner who was also top-scorer for St Colman’s in last year’s knock-out clash, raided for three opportunist goals in the opening half that effectively put the result to bed by the break at 3-6 to 0-6.
In such difficult conditions from both the sky and underfoot, this physical wrestle for supremacy suited a more imposing Cork side who were determined to exact revenge after being knocked out of last year’s Munster Under 19A Championship by the same opponents.
Thankfully, defeat isn’t detrimental this time around as Tulla, following their third successive first round reverse, face a winner-takes-all showdown with Midleton CBS on Wednesday fortnight for the second quarter-final spot from Group 4. Contrasting finishing in the opening period proved decisive as eight Tulla wides were punished by that devastating Magner hat-trick in just 14 minutes.
Following a positive start in which points through Sean Boyce and Dannan Fox allied to a brace of Lorcan O’Connor frees edged the champions 0-4 to 0-3 clear nearing the end of the opening quarter, Tulla’s optimism incrementally deteriorated as the half developed.
The first stemmed from a series of defensive lapses that allowed Magner to nip in and bat one-handed to the right corner of the net in the 13th minute at 1-3 to 0-4. Six minutes later, Cillian Tobin’s powerful shot was excellently repelled by goalkeeper Evan Creaven, only for Magner to react quickest to the rebound while just before the break the Killavullen poacher cut in from the right corner before flicking to the net on St Colman’s way to a 3-6 to 0-6 interval cushion.
The only way was up for Tulla, who were led supremely throughout by captain Evan Maxted, and with the impactful introduction of Jerry O’Connor, they quickly set about eating into the deficit.
Three of the first four points followed, two from Jerry O’Connor frees, to immediately lower the arrears to seven by the 36th minute. Typifying their luck or lack of more pertinently, just when it seemed as if that Tulla were starting to build momentum, they would be floored by another hammerblow when an innocuous centre broke to Sean O’Donoghue to pull to the net and ensure a 4-7 to 0-9 advantage by the two-thirds mark.
Despite their continued fighting spirit manifested most in Maxted, Patrick Daly, Darragh Moroney, Cathal McNamara, Oisin O’Connor and Jerry O’Connor, the goals they craved never materialised as successive attacks saw Sean Boyce see a first attempt saved before a second flashed agonisingly wide of the far post.
Instead, four additional O’Connor placed balls only kept pace with a buoyant St Colman’s who eased into the last eight for the first time in three seasons.
Tulla meanwhile face a preliminary quarter-final against another Rebel side Midelton CBS who drew with St Colman’s in the opening round.
