Clare pipped on goal difference

Clare were denied a place in the quarter finals of the Kennedy Cup (U-14) competition on goal difference.

Unbeaten in their three group games at the University of Limerick this week, they lost out to favourites Wexford who were also unbeaten after the group stage.

The teams met in the opening round on Monday and the match ended in a 1-1 draw with James McCann scoring for Clare in the first half. Wexford equalised from the penalty spot in the second half.
In round two Clare had a 1-0 win over Roscommon with the goal coming from a McCann penalty.

Clare’s third group was to have been played on Tuesday evening but it was postponed, along with a number of games, until Wednesday morning because of heavy rain that rendered pitches unplayable.
Clare beat Inisowen 1-0 with a goal from Ronan Danagher. However, Wexford were 2-0 winners over Roscommon and that gave them a superior goal difference and ensured their qualification to the last eight.

Clare went into the Bowl competition and came up against Cavan-Monaghan in a quarter-final game on Wednesday evening. This game ended in a scoreless draw that resulted in a penalty shoot out. Cavan-Monaghan won this on a 4-2 scoreline.

Clare will have two games today (Thursday), the results of which will determine their final position. They will finish between 13 and 16. To date Clare haven’t conceded a goal from open play.
