Ennis Town Council hosted a civic reception last Friday for members of the Ennis CBS Harty Cup-winning team from 1962.
Fifty years ago last month, the Ennis school won the title for the only time in their history, beating neighbours St Flannan’s in a final that attracted almost 10,000 spectators to Cusack Park.
Recently, members of both teams were introduced to the public during a National League game at the Cusack Park.
Speaking at Friday’s reception at Waterpark House, Mayor of Ennis, Michael Guilfoyle, said the council felt it was “important to honour the players that were involved in what has been described as a major sporting occasion in the town. This game has a special significance for the town. It was the only time that these schools met in the final of this prestigious competition”.
He went on to present a plaque, which contained details of the game, to team members Michael Hanrahan and Gary Stack, who accepted it on behalf of the players. The mayor asked that the plaque be displayed in the school.
Jim Hennessy, trainer of the winning CBS team on that occasion, recalled the campaign and spoke highly of the attitude of the players involved.
Mr Stack, who was at midfield, replied on behalf of the winning team.
Afterwards, the party continued at the Ennis CBS School, where the squad reminisced about that great campaign while attending a reception hosted by school principal, Louis Mulqueen.
