Celebrating regional newspapers

THE capacity of regional newspapers such as The Clare Champion to encapsulate everyday activities and events, from sporting or social occasions to matters of national or international significance, in relatively small geographical areas is celebrated in Local Newspaper Week ’12.

Running from Monday to Friday next, Local Newspaper Week (LNW) is being embraced by 51 local and regional titles that are represented by RNPAI and NNI Local and Regional Newspapers.

These newspapers have a combined weekly circulation of over 450,000 copies and a readership of around 1.4 million.

Clare Champion managing director, John Galvin is delighted the number of newspapers involved has increased considerably from the 30 or so in 2011.

“It is important to remind people of how regional titles can deliver the news that is especially relevant to their area. A lot of issues that are dealt with in regional newspapers mightn’t even get a mention in the national media.

“For example, The Clare Champion is read in virtually all households in the county and its coverage includes news, sports, features and other subjects that provide for diverse interests.

“As part of Local Newspaper Week, a special supplement will be published in The Clare Champion on Thursday next. It will include contributions from national media figures, such as Micheal Ó Muircheartaigh, Miriam Lord and Colm O’Rourke, who will give their thoughts on regional newspapers.”

RTÉ Nationwide will screen a full-length programme on LNW next Monday.

Newstalk, as media partner for the week, will have outside broadcasts in association with the local newspaper of the area for programmes such as The Right Hook and will be putting a strong emphasis on local newspapers throughout the week.
