Captains’ drive-in at Ennis

Captains Michael and Phil Butler drove in to office at Ennis on Saturday last before a big attendance of members.
In conjunction with the drive-in, there was a three-person team competition, which was won by Ned Ryan, Tim Kelly and Seamus Hanrahan with 36 points from Tommy Clancy, Brian O’Gorman and Richard Keane.
During the months of January and February, the men’s committee at Ennis Golf Club will be promoting fourball and singles competitions on alternate weekends.
Each weekend the competition will be run over three days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
In the fourball, re-entry will be allowed with a different partner.

Portumna

After a month of frost and ice Portumna’s golf course re-opened last week under the leadership of captain Christy O’Rourke, lady captain Lilian Austin and president John Harte.
In an open 11-hole competition last week, Ollie Glynn (13) was the winner with 27 points from Graham Carty (15) on 26 points.
Sunday’s three-ball competition winners were Ollie Flanagan, Pat Quinlan and Pat Healy.
In the open three-ball, which runs from September to April, the November winners were Aidan Kelly, Trevor Moran and Damian Quigley with 52 points from Pauline McEvoy, Sean Whelan and John Lynch with a similar score. In third place were Kevin Kenny, Darren Pierce and David O’Loughlin with 49 points.

Woodstock

The winner of the weekend’s competition at Woodstock was James O’Rourke (18) with 34 points. He had one to spare over Frank McInerney (15).
There will be a club singles Stableford competition this weekend.

Shannon

As the weather relented over the holiday period full fields were the order of the day for the various competitions.  The men’s 15-hole fourball saw Tom Prendergast and Kieran Considine victorious with 39 points. In the men’s 15-hole singles over the winter course, Damien Dillon captured the spoils with 43 points. Damien had two points to spare from Pat Griffin. In third place was Mal Roberts with 39 points by virtue of a better back six from Michael Kilmartin. The gross was won by Darren Keane with 34 points.
In the team of four a quartet of Darren Keane, Jim O’Brien, Jim Larkin and Jim Frost captured the honours with 91 points. In second place were Eamon Fanneran, Des McDonnell, John O’Connor and Ally Fleming with 89 points and they edged out Dermot Murphy, Ger Shanahan, Gerry O’Malley and Gerry Gallagher.
The captain’s drive-in will take place this Saturday when Pascal Regan and Mary O’Brien begin their year in office. The weekend competition will be a team of four (any combination).

Lahinch

The winners of the team-of-four scramble on the championship course at Lahinch on New Year’s Day were Michael and Maire Hanrahan, Anna Vaughan and Jenny Cagney with 61.1.
Monday’s ladies’ fourball Stableford competition winners were Gráinne Hennessy (15) and Anne Vaughan (13) with 40 points.

Gort

In the men’s singles Stableford hampers competition at Gort at the weekend, Michael Moroney was the winner with 42 points from Michael Whealan on 41 and John Kelleher, also on 41. David Quirke won the gross with 30 points. Monday’s open singles was also won by Moroney with 45 points from Tony Naughton on 40 points and David Keogh on 39 points. Jason McLynn won the gross with 37 points.
This week there will be a fourball hampers competition on Saturday and Sunday with the weekly open singles on Monday.
In the ladies’ section, the spring league will run from January 1 to March 15.

Clare Teachers Society

The Clare Teachers Society will hold an outing to the Castle Course in Lahinch this Thursday, January 6, when the tee will be available from 9.30am to 11am. The format will be a team of three and a timesheet will operate with details available from Joan at 086 3167365.

Dromoland

Brian Arthur was the winner of the 18-hole singles Stableford competition at Dromoland last week with 39 points from Tom Bennett on 38 and Willie Fitzgerald on 37. Aidan O’Mahony won the junior section with 39 points while the winner of the over-18 handicap section was Noel Stapleton with 36 points.

East Clare

Last week’s men’s winners in the scramble at East Clare were Michael O’Halloran (17) Stephen Moloney (12) and Val Donnellan (10) while the ladies winners were Siobhán Shanahan (18) Catherine Minogue (23) and Joan Kinsella (33). The winter league continues throughout January.

Pitch and Putt

Michael Kerin was the winner of the strokeplay competition at the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club last Sunday, when Timmy Sullivan won the gross.
The postponed Helen Cuddihy Memorial Competition will take place this Sunday.

Ennis Golf Club Seniors

Ennis Golf Club senior section held their last outing of 2010 last week and the format was a team of three over 14holes.
The winners with 51 points were John Keane, Sean O’Gorman and John White and they won by a point from Bernard Hanrahan, Tony Blake and Tony Coote.
In third spot, also with 50 points, were Pat Rutherford, Tom Pilkington and John Keane (Teagasc) with fourth spot filled by Luke Coote, Michael Kenny senior and Noel Pilkington.
