Big entry for Friday open at Spanish Point

LAST week, Spanish Point Golf Club launched their Friday open day, which will continue until further notice. A big entry was further added to by the juniors, who were on their mid-term break.
New to the game last year and continuing with his improvement, Ross Burke played very well and passed the magical 50 points in singles play to finish in first place with a score of 52 points and now plays off 21. In second place with a good score of 43 points was Stephen Cunningham (25). Competition last weekend was a modified fourball and scoring was very good. In first place with 48 points was Niall McMahon (17) and Diarmuid Whelan (5) followed by Christy (19) and Martin Leyden (24) with 46 points.
There will be a men’s club fundraiser this weekend and the format will be an open team or three or four scramble. A timesheet is available in the clubhouse.
The weekly senior’s open continues on Tuesdays with an open singles on Fridays.

Ennis

The winners in the senior ladies’ 10-hole scramble at Ennis last week, were Kate O’Ceallaigh, Claire Ruane and Nuala Guinan from Mary McMahon, Carmel Verling, Nuala d’Auria and Margaret McEnery.
In the ladies’ 14-hole singles competition, Cora Kerins won with 38 points from Bridie Keane on 32 points. 
Saturday’s club scramble was won by Gerry and Rory Keohane and Sean O’Gorman with 73 points from Tony Kinevane, Michael Butler and Rita O’Brien, who had a similar score. In third spot with 71 points were Della Burns, Noel Whelan and Tony Coote.

Shannon

The men’s Wednesday 15-hole singles at Shannon saw Hugh Heaney win with 38 points. Hugh had one point to spare from Tony Fitzgerald while Liam Alford was third with 36 points. Junior member Jamie O’Shea won the gross with 30 points.
In the weekend men’s singles, William O’Brien edged out Vincent Loughnane by virtue of a better back six, both returning 35 points. Again, the back six was required to separate Christy Power and John Gubbins, both returning 34 points and occupying third and fourth positions. The gross was won by Ed Hickey with 29 points.
The men’s winter league final will see team six, comprising David O’Brien, Fintan Ward, Eamon Kirwin, Ray Kiely, Neil Higgins and Vincent Loughnane play team nine, comprising Darren Keane, Eugene Stretton, Joe Hehir, Declan Tracey, Des Elliott and Alan Wallace. The final will take place on Saturday, March 12 with the tee reserved from 11am to 11.45am.
This weekend, the March classic in aid of Milford Hospice in memory of club member Bill O’Shea will be the main attraction.
On Friday, Saturday and Sunday week, the McCavana Cup qualifier (men’s foursomes) will take place, with the winter league final going ahead on Saturday.

Woodstock

Round one in the winter league at Woodstock was played last weekend, when the format was a team-of-four scramble.
The winners with 54 points were Kieran Dromey’s team from Hugh McGrath’s team, who returned 53 points with Bernardo Kelly’s team in third spot with 52 points followed by John O’Connor’s team on 52 points.
Frank Neville (10) was the winner of the club singles with 39 points. 
Next weekend’s competition is the second round of the league, which will be a fourball modified format while there will also be a club singles.

Lahinch

Sunday’s men’s fourball Stableford competition at Lahinch (Old Course) was won by Paul O’Brien (6) and Thomas Neenan (1) with 43 points from Tom (10) and Bryan Curry (11) with 42 points. In third spot were Ray Hennessy (2) and Paddy Coleman (8) with 40 points.
In Saturday men’s singles Stableford, Harry Comber (2) won with 34 points from Walter O’Brien (12) with 33 points with PJ O’Dea (15) in third spot with 33 points.
Last Monday’s ladies’ singles competition was won by Olivia Lucas (10) with 38 points from Patricia Ramsey (21) with 35 points with Kitty Morris (15) in third spot with 34 points.

Dromoland

After week four of the winter league at Dromoland, the team of Mark Hogan, Pat McGrath, Con Woods, Ronan McCarthy and Martin Casey lead from Mick O’Shea, Con Ryan, Barry Moloney, Sean Shanahan and Frank Travers. In third spot are Aidan O’Mahoney, Edmond Moriarty, Dermot O’Neill, Hugh O’Neill and Brian Kelly.
Last week’s winner was Aidan O’Mahoney with a score of six up.

Portumna
In the men’s 15-hole competition at Portumna on Sunday, Matt Donohue (8) was the winner of the 0-10 category with 33 points. Ollie Flanagan (13) won the category 11-14 with 34 points, Martin Quinn (18) won category 15-19 with 29 points and Stephen Madden (25) won the 19 and over category with 36 points. TJ O’Callaghan (27) won the seniors’ section with 33 points.
In the ladies’ spring league, Róisín O’Byrne won the 14-hole Stableford competition with 35 points from Pauline McEvoy with 29 points. 
The junior section of the club will hold their AGM this Saturday at 2pm in clubhouse.

East Clare

Dave Phillips was the winner of the men’s 18-hole singles at East Clare last week with 41 points from Dinny Scanlon on a similar score. John Duffy was third with 40 points. There will be a similar competition this week.
The ladies’ seniors team winners last week were Mary Collins, Marie A Kelly and Anna McGillicuddy from Bernie Bohan, Mary Bugler and Ina Reddan. They will have a 14-hole singles this week.
The final of the winter league will take place on March 13 between Ger Hogan’s, Val Donnellan’s, Sean Ahern’s and Ger Teefy’s teams.

Gort

The weekend’s 18-hole fourball at Gort was won by John Tierney and David O’Dell with 46 points and they had one to spare from Ray Beatty and John Sinnott. In third place with 44 points were Barry Heaney and Barry O’Driscoll.
Monday’s 18-hole singles was won by Seamus Hynes from Oughterard with 41 points.
There will be an 18-hole singles Stableford competition this weekend and the weekly open singles will continue on Monday.
In last week’s ladies’ fourball, the winners were Mary Geoghegan and Regina Malone with 31 points.

Scariff college classic

A team-of-three classic in for the sportsfield development at Scariff Community College will take place at East Clare Golf Club this Saturday. A timesheet is in operation and details can be had by contacting the school on 061 921083 or East Clare Golf Club on 061 921322.

Mid-West Spring Alliance

The Mid-West Spring Alliance continued at Dromoland last week when Dermot Gallagher from Limerick won the gross with 69 from Dave Foley, Dromoland, who returned 71. Pat Murray (Limerick), Paudie McGrath (P&M Golf) and Eddie McCormick (Galway) each scored 72.
With one round left to play, Dave Foley (71, 71), Paudie McGrath (70, 72) and Seamus McEnery (71, 71) are tied in the race for the title of Mid-West Spring Alliance strokeplay winner. The best three rounds out of four count. The leaders are two under while Pat Murray is level (72, 72) with Eddie McCormick on two over (74, 2).
Last week, Jamie O’Shea (Shannon) won the nett with 69 from Nicky Duggan (Dromoland) on 70. The final round takes place this Sunday.
