Best of Clare head to Athlone

 

THE first of three national finals weekends for Community Games takes place this Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Athlone. Clare will be represented in a variety of sporting and cultural events by 198 competitors. Throughout the history of the games, Clare competitors have achieved great success at the national finals and county officials are confident that this record will be enhanced this weekend.

THE girls’ Gaelic football finals, co-ordinated by Kieran Harvey, were held at the weekend when Kilmihil emerged as the Clare winners and they will now go forward to the Munster finals in July.

Hurling

GURTEEN was the venue for the hurling finals last Sunday when Pat Leamy was the co-ordinator. Clarecastle-Ballyea emerged as the winners and they will now represent Clare in the Munster finals.
In the quarter-finals, Doora-Barefield had to give best to Sixmilebridge-Kilmurry while Ennis St John’s overcame Newmarket. Clarecastle-Ballyea accounted for Corofin.
Ennis St John’s overcame Sixmilebridge-Kilmurry by two points in the semi-final, while Clarecastle-Ballyea defeated Inch-Kilmaley-Connolly. In a hard-fought final, Clarecastle-Ballyea proved too strong for their Ennis neighbours. The members of the winning panel are Thomas Gavin, Craig Murphy, Josh Brack, Liam Halpin.
