Award for Willie Clancy co-founder

MUIRIS Ó Rócháin, the co-founder of the Willie Clancy Summer School, has received a TG4 traditional music award.
Muiris has spent many decades dedicated to Irish culture, folklore and community life and is a hugely respected figure in Irish traditional music.
He was reared bilingually in his native Dingle but moved to Miltown Malbay after marrying local woman, Úna Guerin. He is undoubtedly best known for his work as overall director of Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy.
He was a great friend of the genial piper and soon after his death, Muiris was key in the campaign to set up a summer school in his honour. The Willie Clancy Summer School, founded in 1973, was the first of its kind in the world. From 80 students the first year, in recent years it has accommodated 1,500 students from 41 countries, with 250 tutors on all instruments.
