BISHOP of Inis Cathaigh (Scattery Island) Frank Caggiano, Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn, New York is to visit Kilrush in August of next year.

Although Inis Cathaigh no longer functions as a diocese, when an Auxiliary Bishop is appointed, he is given the title of an ancient diocese.

Confirmation of his visit came at this week’s Kilrush Town Council meeting and it will be in conjunction with a planned Scattery Island Gathering next year.
“I note from our correspondence that the newly-appointed Bishop of Inis Cathaigh, the Most Reverend Frank J Caggiano, Vicar General of Brooklyn Diocese, has accepted our invitation to visit Scattery Island in August 2013. This news should give a great boost to our Gathering initiative in 2013,” Councillor Tom Prendeville said at the meeting.

“I am proposing that we establish a committee to co-ordinate the calendar of events for 2013. All aspects of community life in Kilrush should have an input into the year-long programme. This council has a very talented and dedicated marketing officer in Siobhán Garvey and she is the right person to oversee the initiative, which will see thousands of exiles and visitors coming to Kilrush next year,” Councillor Prendeville added.

The motion received the full support of council members, who said they would work in conjunction with the town council’s marketing officer to organise the Kilrush Gathering.
