An Post moves the county goalposts with Tuamgraney, County Limerick

An Post stands accused of yet another land grab after Tuamgraney, which is 32km from Limerick City, was considered to be part of the Treaty County.

Householders are up in arms at attempts to move Ogonnelloe and Tuamgraney into Limerick by readdressing some local correspondence.

Shirley Ward, Ballybrohan, Killaloe, who lives at the rear of the Piper’s Inn in Ogonnelloe was “amazed” when she found a sticker was placed over County Clare on a letter she received with an arrow indicating Limerick should have been inserted instead of the Banner County.

The situation became more bizarre when family a friend, Tom Clifford, Killaloe, made enquiries to An Post in Dublin and was told the correct address on its system is Ballybrohan, Ogonnelloe, Tuamgraney, County Limerick.

Ms Ward described the scenario as “laughable” and doesn’t understand how An Post could state Tuamgraney or Ogonnelloe are in Limerick.
“Do people in An Post know their geography of Ireland and Clare? I couldn’t believe it when I got this letter. We are living about eight miles from Tuamgraney, which in turn is over 20 miles from Limerick. The whole thing is laughable. All I want is for the correct address to be put on my letters,” she said.

Mr Clifford wondered how far would An Post go in terms of moving Clare towns and villages into Limerick? “Will An Post go as far as the Galway border? Scariff and Feakle are the only villages left,” he said.

Recently, Frank Sheahan, Fairyfield, Parteen, was taken aback to discover that An Post had decided to move Parteen into Limerick by placing a change of address sticker on the envelope of correspondence he had received. The sticker stated “important – delay caused by incorrect postal address, please let your correspondents know your correct postal address as indicated opposite” with an arrow pointing to Limerick instead of Clare.

Having lived in Parteen for the last 23 years, Mr Sheahan said he didn’t recall suddenly moving into County Limerick. He also objects to the request that he has to write to all utility providers and people he conducts business with to receive correspondence at his home address.

An Post hadn’t responded to Clare Champion queries at the time of going to press.
