Akers sets three personal bests in Templemore

THE Munster Juvenile U-14 to U-19 Track and Field Championships were held in wet conditions over two days at Templemore and Clare athletes came away with 21 gold, 19 silver and 11 bronze medals.

 

Clare athletes produced outstanding performances over both days. On day one, Tony Odubote (Ennis Track) won the 75m hurdles, 200m and was third in the long jump. He was also part of the boys’ U-15 4 x 100m relay team that captured gold medals.

On day 2, Odubote came through three rounds of the 80m sprints to take gold in a time of 10:21.

In the girls’ U-14 race, four Clare athletes were in the final of the 1,500m with Alex O’Neill (St Cronan’s) having to produce a big finish over the final 100m to take the gold medal with Caoimhie Hogan (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) fifth followed in seventh and ninth by Áine and Emer Keane (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare).

In the boys’ U-14 2,000m walk, Gearóid McMahon won gold with a time of 10.21:20.

On day two, Alex O’Neill (St Cronan’s) in the 800m gave it her all on the home straight only to be beaten on the line and she had to settle for the silver medal with Caoimhie Hogan (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) fifth.

In the high jump, Emily Barry (Marian) won the bronze medal.

In the girls’ U-15 1,500m, the silver medal went to Aishling Kelly (St John’s), while the boys’ U-15 1,500m gold went to Eoin Looney (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) and bronze to Stephen Maher (Ennis Track).

Eoin Looney, Cathal O’Brien and Stephen Maher were in the 800m final and with 200m to go to the finish line, Looney made a move. Nobody was able to live with his pace as he captured gold in a personal best time of 2.08:93, with Stephen Maher fourth and Cathal O’Brien fifth.

Cathal O’Brien (Ennis Track) won a silver medal in the 200m and in the long jump, he was again in the medals, this time winning a silver with a leap of 5.01m.

In the boys’ U-15 100m, Basit Barake (Ennis Track) gave a great display when taking silver with a time of 12:88. Kevin Caulfield (Tulla), in the shot putt, won a bronze medal with a throw of 10.31m.

There was double gold for Angharad Loughnane (Marian) in the U-15 2,000m walk (11:09) and in the shot putt with a throw of 10.91m.

In the girls’ U-16 80m hurdles, Cliodhna Blake (St John’s) produced one of her best ever performances to take a silver medal. She also captured a silver medal in the high jump with a leap of 1.45m.

In the girls’ U-17 triple jump, Rachel Clancy (St John’s) won a silver medal and she will be competing in the Tailteann Games in Dublin in few weeks.

On day 2, Rachel Clancy in the high jump went for 1.60m and was just short on her third attempt. She had to settle for the silver medal on 1.55m.

In the boys’ U-17, there were some very big performances. Ronan Barry (Marian) powered his way around the track to take gold in the 400m with a time of 53:78 and later on that Saturday afternoon, he won a silver medal in the high jump and returned on Sunday to take a bronze medal in the 200m, with a time of 23:67. He won a silver medal in the high jump with a leap of 1.60m.

Kevin Mulcaire (Ennis Track) in the 3,000m made a decisive move after five of the seven laps to take the gold medal in 9.26:50 with his clubmate, Sean Collins (Ennis Track), taking a bronze medal.

On Sunday in the 1,500m, he dominated and with 400m to go, he put the field in single file to take another gold in 4.14:05 with Sean Collins fourth in 4.26:14. In the 2,000m steeplechase, Sean Collins (Ennis Track) captured a silver medal in 7.02:24.

Alice Akers (Marian) set a new personal best in the girls’ U-18 discus with a throw of 35.78m, taking a silver medal. On Saturday afternoon, she set another personal best in the shot putt with a throw of 10.69m and returned on Sunday Morning at 9.30am for her hammer competition. She set a new championship best with a throw of 56.82s to beat her sister, Rachel’s, record from 2003.

Alice Akers will compete in the European Junior Track and Field Championships in July.

Muireann O’Shea (Marian) competed in the final of the U-18 3,000m and ran a fine race to take a silver with a time of 11.07:65 with Laura Power (Ennis Track) taking gold in the girls’ U-18 800m. She had to produce a sprint finish on the home straight of the 1,500m to take the gold medal in 4.59:26 from Muireann O’Shea (Marian) (4.59:90). On Sunday afternoon, Power came away with a silver medal in the 2,000m steeplechase.

Jessica O’Connor (Marian), in the U-18 high jump, won gold with a leap of 1.45m and captured a bronze medal in the 400m hurdles with a time of 78:31.

In the U-18 hammer, there was a big win for Seamus McMahon (Shannon) with a throw of 42.02m. In the boys’ U-18 discus, Eoin Hanrahan (Ennis Track) produced six outstanding rounds to take the gold medal in 42m, with Seamus McMahon (Shannon) fourth in 35.50m.

Eoin Hanrahan came away with a silver medal in the shot putt with a throw of 13.08m, while Jemil Saidi (Ennis Track) captured a bronze medal in the long jump with a leap of 5.23m.

Karl Fitzmaurice (Shannon), running in the boys’ U-19 3,000m, looked to be in complete control of the race and after three laps, he went to the front. Over the final four laps, he cruised to a very good victory with a time of 9.29:28.

In the 3,000m steeplechase, he won another gold medal with a time of 10.41:60 and captured a bronze medal in the 1,500m.

Conor Foley Ellis (Kilmihil), competing in the U-19 javelin and shot putt, came away with silver in both events.
