ALMOST 50 jobs are to go at Shannon Airport as Sky Handling partners are to shed 26 employees, with Servisair likely to make 20 people redundant.
A spokesman for Sky Handling Partners said that while the loss of jobs is regrettable, the company is responding to a downturn in business. He said that the majority of jobs would be going in passenger services, with employees finishing up on October 24. The spokesman added that the company would continue to employ around 14 people at Shannon.
A spokesman for Servisair said that discussions are ongoing with SIPTU regarding redundancies.
He said that the company is set to let go around 20 people and that it wouldn’t be on a last in-first out basis.
“The company will be looking at performance, training and attendance, as well as any disciplinary issues,” he said.
A spokesman for SIPTU said that management had put an overall package to workers and members are currently voting on whether to accept it.
Mayor of Clare Tony Mulcahy said it is more disappointing news.
“Everyday of the week we’re trying to put out fires. I know quite a few people working in both companies and they’re decent people, many of them rearing families. We’ve a challenge now to try and fill the void that’s left.”
